“don't go here!”

We went to the Jewel of Newbury because all hotels were occupied. We met the owner who was very strange and a bit scary. His mood swinged within one minute! After a sightseeing in the hotel we didn't choose to stay here. It was worn out, a very scary owner and no other guests. He wouldn't let us go and wanted to bargain about the price, we could get the room for 150 dollar. When we refused this offer, he warned us that we would be in a lot of danger in Boston, It was a very dangerous city! Finally we ended up in the Hilton at the airport which was great and had a great time in Boston.

“Hardly the "Jewel of Newbury!!!"”

The Jewel of Newbury

I guess I should have known that there was an issue when I called to make a resevation and a very young child answered the phone and just said hello. When asked if this was the "Jewel", they went to get someone that was just barely older. I was told that the price would be about $275. for the night for my daughter and me. I guess that the next warning was when I showed up that the hotel and the door was locked and we had to bang on the front door as no one answered the doorbell. When someone did come, we could see that they had been laying on the foor in what looked like the foyer. He was barefoot. We were lead to our room on the third floor and we carried our bags, there is no elevator, and he had forgotten the key. I sent my child down with him to get it as he had to return t the front desk. When they did get back, I was given a key that had no tag and no number- just a key. There was no A/C, jsut a heating system that he controled, no curtains in the room and no closet. This was what he called a "suite" as they did not have the room that I had booked. He said that it was their mistake and this would be our room. There were no conture sheets on the beds, and the matresses where what would have been found in a rooming house. There were no doors on the bathroom, and the place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. If there was a restaurant, there was no way that we would have eaten in it. They had never mentioned that there was een a restaurant there. The tv was small, and the people were very rude. There was hot water only once and a while; if this was a hotel, I don't see how they have stayed in business. It looks like a front for something else and I have just helped to pay the mortgage bill for the month. When checking out, my bill was almost doubled from what I was told that it would be and there was no way that I could despute it. I had not eaten, and had ordered nothing- I mentioned that they had upgraded me as they didn't have my room I had paid for over the phone. I was in a bind and have stayed across the street before at the Newbury Guest House ( they were booked and it is wonderful) and that is the only way that I had known this place existed. There is no way that I would ever go back, and there is no way that this was a one time occurence for these people. I did not feel safe and I certainly didn't feel clean and I am certainly going to watch my credit card for months to come- I wish I ahd read the reviews first. This was a huge mistake!

“Terrible!”

As most other reviewers have noted, the owner is rude and intimidating. Do not give your credit card details, he charges the card before you even get there. The airconditioning was not on during a hot period in Boston. He checks you in to a room with joint facilities (who wants that these days?) and when you ask for a proper room, charges you $100 extra. Unfortunately also witnessed him making some distasteful comments about people of other religions and cultures. VERY VERY uncomfortable and horrible stay. I am afraid so I will stay anonymous.

“Unique hotel”

The Jewel of Newbury

It's really cool place--different than the rest--different experience with its unique location, it's a nice place to stay there for three nights or so.

We stay there for two nights and the whole experience is different. What I mean by different is it's not usual to know the owner of a hotel or to order your tea or coffee from him directly. And he does them very well.

The rooms look like an old house in a movie---cozy, relax, comfortable. the bathroom is amrbel if that means anything to you--my wife loves that -idon't know why.

overall, i love it and think it's worth a visit even for a meal if not a stay.

The owner of this place is arrogant, unbelieveably rude, and awkward. After all ready charging our credit card we were informed as we walked in the door that we were not allowed to stay there because we were "young, white, girls". He then tried to show us the room when he knew that he was going to loose our business. Do not stay here - there are so many beautiful places in Boston. Don't waste your time and your money.
