“Charming Hotel”

San Remo Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Grand Island, New York
Jul 14, 2008

We stayed at this hotel for two days over the 4th of July holiday. Very charming hotel. We had an interior room (we were told it had no window) which was very small. Our room did have a window though...it opened into the hallway. Very bright room because of skylights in the hall. Shared bathrooms were always available and clean. Fresh towels always ready too. A great place to stay.

“Good value, great location”

San Remo Hotel

I stayed at the San Remo for three nights. I doubt you could find better value in such a great location for Fisherman's Wharf, the Maritime State Park and ferries to Alcatraz. One block from one cable car turnaround, four blocks from another. I got one of their special deals on their website, stay two nights and get the third for $50, making the stay just over $200.

The room, 62, was a twin room with an external alley facing window and an internal window. It was clean and comfortable. I think Saturday morning must be garbage day because there was a bit of a racket just before 8am but then I needed to get up anyway!

Mixed experiences on service. I got back late on July 4th and was dying for ice and the girl on front desk was super helpful. On the other hand on July 3rd I asked someone else on the desk where San Francisco's 4th of July fireworks took place and he didn't know and had no idea how I could find out. As is it turned out that there were fireworks going off at Fisherman's Wharf, two blocks away, I think that was a bit poor. In addition all of my towels magically disappeared from my room on the second day, so I got back to find no towels and had to go towel hunting.

Avoid checking out at 11am at all costs. That's check out time but they were also allowing people to check in at the same time. It was... hectic.

Parking is only a block away at two different car parks. I checked my bill and found I had been charged room tax on car parking. Perhaps that is usual, and knowing the queue at the desk I chose not to go back and fuss over $8 but if that's not usual that needs to be fixed on their computer system.

That said, I can't fault the rooms, the wi-fi access or the location, all entirely acceptable for the price.

I didn't have to wait longer than a couple of minutes for a shower and there are paper mats available so you can put a fresh sheet down for your use. I always wear flip flops in shared showers like that but they looked clean enough. Shampoo, conditioner and soap all provided in the cubicle.

I would definitely stay here again, no problem at all.

“Quaint gem”

San Remo Hotel

Charming turn-of-the-century boarding house that is beautifully decorated, a pleasure just to wander around, admiring the posters and photgraphs on the walls. I grew up in the North Beach neighborhood in SF and returned for a couple of days on business. Was attracted by the low price and can easily navigate shared baths (these had pull-chain toilets, a bathtub with feet, and shower stall with great water pressures). No phones, no TV, but who cares? No refrigerator and you have to borrow an alarm clock, but free free massage chairs in the common area! Free massage chairs! An internet kiosk takes a credit card.

Spotlessly clean, turn-of-the century decor in the rooms, but brand-new firm mattresses. Rooms are small, but not overly so. Might get noisy when crowded, but it wasn't a problem when I was there,

4-star Italian restaurant on the first floor (Fior d'Italia), you can also walk a few blocks (or take the cable car) to the restaurants in North Beach, Chinatown, or Fisherman's Wharf (a piece of advice: don't eatt there; the seafood in Chinatown is much better!). Short walk to Pier 39 (yuck!), Ghirardelli Square and Aquatic Park. Safe neighborhood.

If you are two on a budget and sharing the same bed, this is a great place to stay. Romantic and inexpensive. And in SF. I paid $85 in May during the week; it is a bit higher on the weekend.

“A petite jewel in the North Beach”

San Remo Hotel

May 8, 2008

The rooms at the San Remo are like tiny gems of quaint comfort in this charming Euro-style hotel. Emphasize the tiny: the rooms are very small and travellers sharing a room should like each other very much. Hotel guests seeking expansive luxury should keep looking--this isn't the hotel you visit when you want to be pampered. Instead, it's a hotel of simple comforts in a very compact space.

The hotel is extremely clean--while I never saw anyone cleaning the shared bathrooms, they were clean and neat at every hour of the day. The entire hotel is very tidy and neat.

One nice little perk was that the bathrooms were stocked with soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Although I had my own toiletries with me, I tried each of the products the hotel stocks and they were all of good quality. Also, in addition to the towels provided in the guest room, there was a good supply of additional towels in the shower area. The bathrooms are divided up into separate sections that do a great job of giving plenty of access to the guests who share them--on my floor there were two separate toilet rooms, a room with two sinks, and two small shower rooms with a private shower in each. Even with most of the rooms full there was very little waiting for any of these facilities and I cannot emphasize enough how impressed I was at how clean they all were.

The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. They keep lists of recommended activities, dining choices, and places to see in the city and are eager to help guests figure out an itinerary that suits them. I felt very welcomed when I checked in and very appreciated when I checked out.

I would absolutely recommend the San Remo to San Francisco travellers and plan to stay there again the next time I vist that city.

“Fantastic”

San Remo Hotel

Well we didn't know what to expect from the hotel. The website was good and told you enough but when we got there it was even better. It was so central, only a few blocks from fishermans wharf and you only had to walk a few blocks to get some good food and have some fun. The rooms were just what we needed, as we are on a year long trip and it was our first stop, so we got a lovely room on the second floor with two twin beds. The rooms are pretty basic but perfect for us. I would tell everyone I know it's worth staying there if they are looking for budget accommodation with a bit of history and class. The staff were very helpful also. I really can't fault the place. Will be staying there again when I go back.
