“Great location, small bathrooms, excellent bang for the buck”

Chancellor Hotel on Union Square

I stayed with my wife and small baby in the Chancellor for three nights and I had a good overall stay.
The location is excellent, near Union Square, with many shopping places and restaurants and theaters nearby. It is also on the cable cars route if you want to use them. However, it is not a good location if you are mainly going to visit Fisherman's Wharf.
We had a rental car and it was a little complicated to load/unload our luggages, but the garage a half block away was easily accesible and open 24 hour/day, though a little pricey ($22.00/day, because of the location). You can also get valet, but it will cost you $34.00/day and you may have to wait longer.
We had a room on the 15th floor (1500) and it was on the small side, but not too bad, considering it fit a crib without too many problems. The bathrooms are very small, although the tub is large and the shower good and they change/add toiletries daily. There was a little mold on the paint near the shower, but I think it can be fixed easily with some paint job. The closet was astoundingly enormous, a walking closet! with a safe and ironing board/iron. There is no A/C, we had a fan in our room but it was never hot. We liked being on the last floor (15th) because the ceiling was really high (20 feet at least) and the window was as well really tall, plus I think we got less of the street noises. We did not try the restaurant for breakfast but appreciated the free cookies and coffee available at the bar.
Staffing was helpful and corteous, there is a small tour organizing area with a very nice lady that was helpful to us in a few occasions.
Overall a pleasant stay, would recommend to others.

We stayed here from the 12th-15th July. The location is great with lots of shops and restaurants nearby. Our room was smallish but had a view of Union Square. The staff were terrific and could not do enough for us. We made good use of the free tea and coffee, free cookies and use of the internet. This is a super hotel in a great location that offered excellent value for money.

“Great central location”

Stayed five days at the Chancellor Hotel, great location, great weather, close to everything, shopping, siteseeing, trolleys, Union Square, China town and easy access by trolley to Pier 39 and the waterfront. Did not use a car during our stay.
Selected the Chancellor Hotels from several in the area due to non smoking hotel, no pets allowed, and for discount given for 5 day stay. The best value of the ones considered.
Staff was attentive and helpfull and provided suggestions on restaurants, transportation and events in the area. Restaurant in hotel was convenient and great for breakfast.
Room was mid level at the rear of the hotel, as per our request, it was well furnished, quiet, clean, good size for an older establishment with a large closet, window opened for fresh air.
We look forward to a return trip to San Francisco and staying at the Chancellor Hotel.

This is a great hotel. The staff are friendly and welcoming. They helped us out with our queries. We had an average sized room with a very comfortable bed. The location is great, right near one of the tram stops and close to restaurants and shopping. The room was kept really clean. You can help yourself to coffee, tea and cookies in the reception area and there is nice bar for a drink at the end of the day. Sweets in the room were a nice touch. I would definately stay here again.

“Ok but was expecting more for the money”

Spent 3 nights at the Chancellor Hotel on Union Square. Location is good if you want to go shopping but the Piers and Fishermans wharf are too far away and on foot are about a 45 minute walk.

The room was too hot, rather small and the bed was way too soft. Not sure that it was great value for money either - I had a suite in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas for the same money the following week.

Overall it is ok but not as good as I had hoped.

All I can say is PLEASE do your research. Once again, in this world of the internet, the distance to the Wharf should not be a surprise, the room size should not be a surprise thanks to sites like this and others say the beds are fine. What can we do?

By the way, Las Vegas doesn't make money on their room sales. If we had a multi billion dollar gaming operation we could charge a lot less for our rooms too. I have stayed in Reno in a nicer room for less than San Francisco charges a typical visitor in room tax. So what? I have also paid more in NYC and London for a worse room. We don't write the rules, we are just a part of them.
