“Do you want a little privacy in your stay on Maui?”

Wailuku Guesthouse

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying in the Wasabi Suite at the Wailuku GuestHouse in Wailuku, Maui in August 2007. The suite was everything and more than we had anticipated and the accommodations were exactly as the pictures shown on their web site ([--]). Maureen was a very cordial host and informative as to what was happening on the Island, where to go for adventures, and where to go to eat. She makes a very tasty loaf of banana bread, by the way!! The room had a journal beside the bed that other visitors had given good ideas also. There wasn't additional costs for the parking area beside the house which was convenient. On relaxing mornings or afternoons, the pool was refreshing. The Kahului and Waikulu area is great if you're not looking for the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. The island isn't that large that you can't enjoy the tourism areas because we took in the entire Island and could go home at night to a quiet nights sleep. Thanks Maureen & Doug and when we come back to Maui, you betcha you'll be hearing from us for another stay.

My husband & I were vacationing on Oahu for two weeks from 8/16 - 30/07. I booked Interisland flight through Go Airlines for Maui and searched for nice B & B to stay at for 8/23-25/07. What a let down when we finally found the Wailuku Guesthouse. The front entrance was a mess & no one to greet us. When Maureen eventually showed up we were shown to the Plantation room (my bedroom closet at home was bigger) Maureen is a very fast talker and left us very abruptly. I looked at the spec of a room & my husband and said" were getting out of here." I highly recommend the Maui Seaside Motel. I did have the courtesy to call Maureen after checking into the Maui Seaside Motel to let her know we left & wouldn't return. Turned a negative into a positive!

There is a sad but consistent theme with this and all other level 1 reviews - these guests wanted an unfair refund or damaged our house and were charged for it. In this case this guest found alternative accommodations and showed up with the express purpose of demanding a refund. We politely declined, and as usual our punishment is to be rated poorly. Please consider this when assessing this review.

my BF and i stayed in the wasabi suite at wailuku guesthouse from 4-10-07 - 4-23-07 and had a wonderful time. Maureen our hostess was perfect for what we came to maui for. We came to relax but be in a friendly environment not to be pampered but also not to be ignored and that is what we found here. The neighborhood the guesthouse is in is where the local people live and a wonderful insite for day to day life. Many of the other guests were repete guests and a wealth of knowledge as to where to go, what to do, and what to avoid, as was Maureen herself. The room was perfect for two people who don't want to be tripping over each other but cozy to also be intimate. There is a beautiful salt water pool with tables and chairs that you don't have to fight hordes of people to use and can relax after your day. It is also reasonably priced so your not spending money that you would be able to spend on other pursuits whatever they may be. This is like living on maui as a visitor but in a very relaxed and also social manner. If your the type of person that needs to be pampered to be happy you will not enjoy the essence of the island. The location is central so you really don't have to drive far to go and see the many sites the island has to offer. Our stay here was perfect for us and we very much enjoyed it. Mahalo to Maureen and her family for our wonderful experience of our two weeks on Maui, Deb & Mark

Wailuku Guesthouse

We just got back from our stay at the Wailuku Guesthouse. As far as cleanliness, the room was fine but very, very small, and the carpets and matress were obviously very old. The carpet was matted down and the mattress was as hard as a rock. We never once saw the "hostess," only received notes on our door. There was a refrigerator in the room that was broken and leaked when we turned it on. Because the room was sooo small, my husband accidently knocked two of the panes (they were jalousie windows, the ones that look like glass blinds and crank) out. We called around that day and found out that they were seven dollars a pane. When we returned to the room, the window had already been repaired. We tried to talk to the "host" about paying for the damage but she said she did not have the bill yet...When we returned home, we found out that we had already been charged $250 to our card, three days before we asked her about it and she said she didn't have a bill. She also charged us for damage to her carpet which came from her nasty refrigerator.
Bottom line, you pay for what you get and in our case, we paid for a whole lot more. We ended up paying as much as we would have at a hotel and certainly had none of the service or hospitality that would have come with a hotel stay.
Some advice:
Rather than waste your money at Wailuku (which is in a bad neighborhood to boot) hold out for a true bed and breakfast that understands the concept of island hospitality.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — the only thing we liked was the central location
    • Disliked — the room size, bed was uncomfortable and the "hostess" herself was very rude
    • Tips/Secrets: — Don't go here; in cases like this, going somewhere else would be worth the splurge

There is a sad but consistent theme with this and all other level 1 reviews - the reviewer wanted an unfair refund or damaged our house and was charged for it. In this case these guests damaged our room and equipment - breaking windows, losing coolers, and spilling beer. The price they were charged wasn't just for the glass, it was for the hassle of making the repairs and cleaning the carpet on short notice. As usual our punishment is to be rated poorly. We're going to modify their advice slightly: Don't stay with us if you want to damage our rooms!!! Humor aside, please consider this when assessing this review.

You can't tell from their website but the rooms are the size of closets. only one person can walk in the room at a time. Also the pool area was very dirty! If you are going to Maui for vacation it won't feel like one if you stay here! It's also NOT a guesthouse it's the back part of the owners house in a neighborhood. not what we expected and decided to leave early. the owner refused to give us our money back and charged us for a week when we only stayed one night.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Disliked — no likeness to their photos on their website! No good beaches nearby!
    • Tips/Secrets: — don't stay here. It's worth the extra money to be in a better part of town too!

In this case as the guest admits, they wanted a refund and we politely declined. As usual our punishment is to be rated poorly, so please consider this when assessing this review. This guest did mention a few other items that we agree with. For example the guesthouse is a nine bedroom, seven bath house, originally built as officer's quarters for the Armory next door in 1945 so the rooms are small, but they do have a lot of character. We live here too, but you'll find this to be true of most B&B like accommodations. We're also in a local town, so its character is completely different. Adventurous guests typically love exploring Wailuku Town -especially for it's low priced local eateries - but for some the experience just wasn't the traditional tourist one they expected. Finally, unlike a resort which can plant them 100 yards away, our pool is surrounded by trees and leaves DO get in our pool, and we have a large selection of kids toys that often get left all over the place (kids being what they are!) - but it's comfortably heated year round and always crystal clear.
