“Outstanding hostel!”

Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel

Mar 31, 2008

Aloha fellow budget travelers,

Just got back from a week's stay at this amazing hostel and wanted to let you all know that I gladly give this place two BIG thumbs up! I am a single female and seek out hostel accomodations wherever I travel, both for the commraderie and economical advantages. The Banana Bungalow lived up to it's name and then some. The friendly and helpful staff and fellow travelers really added a lot to the character of the place. The staff does an amazing job of cleaning the hostel everyday. The owner of the hostel lives onsite and is super laid back and really goes out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. He even treated us unexpectedly to a keg party on Friday night!! The free tours truly are free as advertised on the internet and really show you the heart and soul of Maui and what makes it so unique. The tour guides are truly wonderful and tireless in their efforts to make your stay and adventures unforgetable. I enjoyed seeing hundreds of humpback whales, swimming with Green Sea Turtles and even seeing Spinner Dolphins jumping in front of the bow of the catamaran boat. This is a trip I will never forget and I am already planning to visit Maui next year with my friends. We will definately be staying at the amazingly cool Banana Bungalow.

Mahalo,
Sheila

“Great People and a Clean Room!”

Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel

I stayed at the hostel with a friend that was not looking forward to sharing a bathroom with others. Since, she wasn't very excited about the bathroom situation we only stayed there our last night. As soon as we checked in and started meeting people she immediatly said, " I wish we stayed here the entire time!" We had a room that was basically in the back yard right next to the hot tub. I was a bit worried about it bc I figured we would be up all night, but amazingly the staff actually enforced the 10pm quite time! I had a great night sleep and was rested for our day in Hana. What ever you do MAKE SURE TO DO THE FREE TOURS!!! They are great! Over all I found the place to be clean, friendly and had everything we needed. I would say if your going to be there for a few days you might want to rent a car (bc the hostel is a bit out of the way) so you can have the freedom to explore. However, if you're going on a budget a lot of people took the bus and managed fine. One thing I would recommend, surf lessons in Lahaina at Goofy Foot! Sooooo much fun! The best thing I did all trip. Have fun!

I have been there 3 times and each time has been a blast! The staff is great...friendly, fun, helpful, with only a couple of oddballs thrown in. Met great people from all over and still keep in touch with some. One young man from Switzerland we met on our first visit in 2004 even came to my daughter's wedding! The mix of people is rich, all types, most very freindly! Of course, there may be some that make you feel a little wary, but that can happen any where. The tours are wonderful, beautiful, and fun. They take you places you might never discover on your own...Never picked up any bugs myself....

“Total Dive”

Banana Bungalow Maui Hostel

Frankly, this place is a dive. We went to Maui expecting a lot more, and it is probably our fault that we ended up here due to poor research. To experience Maui, and be anywhere that offers something to do, you need to be on the other side of the island. Kahalui has nothing to offer - and in particular Wailuku where the banana bungalow is situated, i think is the a$$ end of the world. It is a dirty, grotty, lifeless and depressing little down. The hostel is opposite government housing and it feels about as safe as being in the middle of the bronx. If you dont have a car, dont even bother considering this place. The day trips were ok, but given where you have to go back to every night its not worth it. Spend a bit more and go to Lahaina or somewhere else. At $60 a night, it is not worth it for such substandard accomodation, even for a hostel.
