I visited Maui in May of 2007 with my parents. i'm 25 and had just graduated law school and my parents are pretty easy going. I've been to Maui before and on my trips I've stayed at a bed and breakfast in Lahaina, the Maui Coast Hotel in Kihei, an Ekolu Village condo in Wailea, the Maui Prince Hotel in Makena and the Blue Tile House in Paia.
We were supposed to stay 3 days in the oceanfront suite at a cost of $250 a night. We only ended up staying one night. True this is not a hotel but at $250 a night it is not cheap either, and to be quite honest it is the same rate we ended up paying at the Maui Prince hotel (where we stayed after we left). Additionally it is more expensive than the condo at Ekolu Village, which is where we spent the first half at our vacation. For a cheaper price we had a very clean, immaculate condo with all brand new appliances, a full kitchen with granite countertops and very tasteful new decor. The grounds were also very well maintained and I felt extremely safe there.
The same cannot be said of the Blue Tile House. When we arrived we each got a funny feeling in the pit of our stomachs, but we each kept it to ourselves for the time being. The house was definitely dated and not very clean. There seemed to be a layer of dust over everything. Our oceanfront suite did not live up to our expectations. The bathroom was small, the shower lookd like it used to be an outdoor shower and the indoor jacuzzi was straight out of the 1970s. It was a chocolate brown color and looked like it hadn't been used in decades. The room itself was not very clean and within the first 5 minutes I sat on the couch and "found" a pair of used white panties. I wasn't digging in the couch for them either. We went to tell I think it was Angie and her response was "it happens". Not exactly reassuring. She didn't offer to do anything and didn't even act surprised or even apologize. It might happen, but usually if there is a maid then panties on the couch will be found. After the panty incident we each finally spoke up and said we wanted to get out of there. We ended up booking a room at the Maui Prince for the same price as the Blue Tile House, but couldn't leave until the next day.
We did go out to dinner to Momma's Fish House (good, but a little overpriced/ been there for lunch before and that is a better deal) On the way there we noticed a rough looking man looking in the windows of our rental car at the Blue Tile House parking lot. We also noticed that the "beach" in front of the Blue Tile house was not very desirable. There were some more rough looking people camped out right in front of the house. Personally I would not feel safe outside after dark or by myself at the beach during the day. i would not suggest the house for families either. Every other beach/ place we went I always felt safe, but this place I simply did not. My intuition was sounding alarms all over the place.
This place might be fine for some, but it is definitely not a bargain and for the money i expect a clean place where I feel safe.

Dear TripAdvisor viewers,
Without a doubt, I recall this unique situation in May 2007. I was taken back that our guests found a pair of panties in between the arm rest and the futon mattress. I was in shock and embarrassed that our housekeeper had missed this during the room cleaning from the honeymooning couple staying in the Groundfloor Suite the week before. I am unhappy to hear that this family states that my only response was "it happens". This is not the case at all- I was extremely apologetic for this awful mishap. Upon their complaint, they had mentioned the room was dirty. I asked our guests specifically what they had found to not be clean. The first complaint was, of course, the panties (how embarrassing to say that), and lastly they complained that the floor under the bed had not been swept. Indeed, there were a couple of dust bunnies and a hairpin by the kickboard. As a whole, the suite was cleaned very well. They made mention of our jacuzzi bathtub. It is brown, and it is older, but it is clean and it works very well. Our website does not deny our house is a dated home, but it creates charm and character. As far as the room rate, it is an appropriate fare. You cannot get any closer to the ocean, the room is spacious, clean, and very comfortable and the beach outside is a fantastic beach used by many children, families, windsurfers, surfers, and more. We do not prefer to be compared to hotels and condominiums as this is not our business. We invite guests INTO OUR HOME, a place we are passionate about keeping up. They state that there were "rough" looking people on the beach. Please understand that Hawaii has a unique variety of people that choose the islands for their residence. Paia Town is filled with all sorts of people- some of the most fascinating people watching in the world in fact! The cultural diversity is what makes the north shore so inviting. I am amazed that they are basing how a person is and potentially acts based on their first glance and have the audacity to write about it on this review when there was no threat in any way to them. We are a thriving small business and we have so many happy guests and a healthy share of return customers as well. As a potential guest reading this, please feel free to call me for any questions, comments, or concerns about this or any review. The Groundfloor Beachfront Suite is my favorite room and I would highly suggest a stay for anybody, couples, families, older adults, etc...
Last but not least, this incident occurred in May of 2007. I am in question why they wrote a review that was a complaint almost one year ago. Regardless, there are two sides to every story and mahalo for taking time to read our response to this review.
Sincerely, Management
