We spent a week in Maui hiking, swimming, snorkeling and exploring with our 8 month old daughter. We have traveled to a lot of off-the-beaten path places around the world so we took a windsurfing friend’s recommendation to stay in Paia to experience the wild side of Maui. We loved the authentic character of Paia, the experience of doing as locals do, and the laid-back attitude of the north shore. We stayed at Blue Tile Beach House because it matched the way we like to travel and we felt right at home and would stay here again.
From the website, we had high hopes about the location since we wanted quick access to our room with a baby. Frankly, we can’t afford (or refuse to pay) for beachfront accommodations typically. When we arrived, we were thrilled to be on the beach, with a great lawn and garden to relax in beachfront, and with a lanai looking out on the beach. It was one of the best views we have ever had and we planned our days here to take advantage of the beach. The swimming here is good – a little sheltered area behind some breaking rocks, or some moderate, but safe surf. The beach was small enough, but never felt crowded and we fell asleep to the sound of crashing waves. This is what we came to Hawaii for!
Angie is a truly warm, gracious host, thinking always of how to make your stay great. She had a pack-and-play crib in the room for us when we arrived and had suggestions for a babysitter and the best baby beach (Baldwin Beach, but we liked our beach better). We knew what we wanted to do (hike Haleakala, watch windsurfers, eat some of the great food in town, beach bum) and she had the best suggestions for trails, viewpoints, and restaurants. We also had several interesting conversations about what it is like to live in Hawaii and run an inn. The other guests who shared our time there were also lively, fun, and out exploring the island. There was the vibe of a youth hostel – relaxed, friendly and sharing stories about life and travel.
Blue Tile Beach House is a great place to stay if you have an open mind, warm heart, and sense of adventure. It has three things going for it that can’t be topped by anything else in its class – location, amenities and hosts. There is nothing else that compares in this price range in a beach town on Maui (okay, we can’t be the authorities, but we did a lot of research and stayed a few other places). We loved the location and off-street parking. We took advantage of the kitchen, beach towels, beach mats, treats in the room and snacks in the kitchen (fruit, drinks and breakfast fare were there all day). Best of all, were treated like real people without paying for 5-star service.
Admittedly, the house isn’t perfect and in fact, is slowly being renovated to upgrade the kitchen, some bathrooms and some of its oddities. It is a house converted to an inn and has its dated features and décor, but the rooms were clean, linens were crisp, and things worked. It was cleaner and more cared about than many vacation-by-owner type of properties we have rented that feel neglected. It is a great value and unique place and we hope that never changes!
