“My favorite place to stay on Maui!”

Hale Ho'okipa Inn Makawao

May 9, 2008

Hale Hookipa Inn is my Maui home! Beautiful rooms and great service. Very clean, bedspreads, shower mats and curtains and everything in between are cleaned after each guest leaves. Always extra towels, blankets, and pillows available too. Cherie and her staff are very accomodating and great company too.

“Home away from home”

Hale Ho'okipa Inn Makawao

Wichita, Kansas

Although our actual home is in Kansas, our home for the past 6 years during Christmas vacation has been at the Hale Ho'okipa Inn. We actually stumbled across the property's web site several years ago and from the beginning we have enjoyed many wonderful times. We found the hospitality amazing. Cherie has always gone above and beyond to ensure that we experience true aloha spirit. She created an atmosphere of instant family with everyone gathered around the breakfast table discussing their adventures from the previous day and the plans for the coming day. Cherie is a wealth of knowledge for the Hawaiian culture, activities and events and gave us suggestions every day on new things to see and experience. We especially loved her knowledge of native Hawaiian plants. The property had a variety of flowers and fruits, many that we got to enjoy for breakfast. We learned the history of the house, the family that built it and lived there. We appreciate that Cherie maintained the character of the older Hawaiian home with all of the upgrades to make her guest comfortable. We really enjoyed staying upcountry away from the crowded resorts and getting to experience what it's actually like to live there, not just visit. Being from Kansas, we appreciate the phrase, "there is no place like home" and that's how we feel when we are there.

“Experience the Early Days of Maui in an Upcountry B&B”

Hale Ho'okipa Inn Makawao

Feb 12, 2008

The Hale Ho-okipa Inn Bed and Breakfast is an outstanding place to stay in Maui.

I was there for a month and was so impressed with Cherie and her care of the Inn. It was as if I were staying at her home and she was an old friend who was taking care of me.

The property is reminiscent of Old Hawaii with Cherie's careful restoration to the period of the 1920s when it was a family residence. It is comfortable and warm and the antique furnishings match that era.

Cherie's stewardship of the land is awe-inspiring. The garden is inviting and maintains the spirit of Up Country. She spends seven days a week in the care of her guests and the property.

Her dedication and commitment shows as she goes about her work taking the time to notice and maintain the Inn at a Five Star Hotel level. It is very obvious that she loves the land and is devoted to its care.

I look forward to another visit to Maui and the Hale Ho-okipa Inn Bed and Breakfast

“Very disappointed”

When we first entered the room, we soon used the bathroom.
The toilet seat was not attached to the toilet, it slide around.
Later that evening, when using the shower, when we stepped from the shower ,we pratically stepped into the toilet! The sink was in-room, very low, and one had to assume a "bent over" awkward position to use it.
Being first time Maui travelers, we assumed good weather, however we arrived at this B&B during a cold snap. We froze in our room all night and were not offered a heater; there was no central heat of course. The owner, a vet at the business, should have been prepared for cold weather at times.
We learned that the owner had hosted guests for 12 years, and we felt that our linens, sheets, towels, blankets, had been in use for 12 years too. Breakfast was continental, serve yourself... fruit,
yogurt, cold cereals, instant oatmeal, marginally adequate.
We travel to B&B's allot, and this is the first time we have rated a property at this level. We are sorry, but maybe we don't like the antique feel, but we want the simple comforts to make traveling a grand experience.

The couple of negative reviews, out of many positive ones, have come during very disappointing weather.Lots of rain and wind on your Hawaiian vacation can be a major let down.. We had a very cold snap, we even had snow on the mountain this winter. That's a once in every 5-10 years experience.
I have new heaters in all the rooms now, and additional quilts. The oil radiator has been on in the living room for the last few weeks of this cold snap, and the house now feels very cozy and warm. Older Hawaiian homes were built for a mild climate, and this 90 year old house is no exception. The original double hung windows are not air tight, and most of the time, that is just fine. I did replace the cuirtains of this room with heavier ones during this cold spell as well.
I spend alot of time and energy trying to keep guests comfortable, so they can enjoy the experience of Aloha. It's nice to know people are enjoying themselves in your home.
We are not allowed to serve a hot breakfast without a special permit which requires a commerical kitchen. I serve a full, island style continental breakfast with many special fruits from the garden and local breads and jams and jellies, organic cereals and yogurts. Most folks love the breakfast, but if a cooked meal is what someone is after, they may be disappointed.
I'm very sorry these guest did not enjoy their stay. Truely, had I known they had some issues while they were here, I would have done everything I could have to make it a more pleasant stay.
The linens are not high -end expensive, but they are 100% cotton, and are updated very often. I shop for new linens and towels monthly and am constantly rotating out the older ones and replacing them with new ones. I like a nice presentation, and that means soft, comfortable and pretty linens as well.
The grounds are always a work in progress, everything grows like crazy, and I don't use any chemicals in the gardens. There is always something in season. I try to keep the grounds inviting and beautiful for all to enjoy.
Sorry it was raining too hard for these folks to enjoy.
The weather is out of my hands though......, but our draught is over now, and that is a good thing!
Aloha

“Hale Ho'okipa Inn a Unique Experience - Loved It!”

We had just stayed for a week at a ritzy timeshare on Kaanapali Beach, then went upcountry to stay at the Hale Ho'ookipa Inn. If you love antiques and the "country" look, you'll love this Inn! It's very quaint, in a charming, unique sort-of way. There was Hawaiian art everywhere (original drawings, photographs, stained glass, pottery, etc.) which added to the appeal. I love taking photos, so I've attached several photos I took of the Inn during our stay. The location was perfect for a central location to visit Haleakala, the Tedeschi Winery, Pai'a and, of course, the Hana Highway.

Cheri, the owner, was fun and a great resource for the upcountry area. She was warm, welcoming, and didn't complain when my kids (tweeners) staying in another bedroom got a little loud and boisterous.

Oh! I can't forget the continental breakfasts! Cheri has several fruit trees growing in her yard and we had fresh Hawaiian fruits, yogurts, granolas, danish, juice, etc. every morning. It was wonderful. My mouth is watering just thinking about it... we can't wait to go back!

I also have to add that we went the week between Xmas and New Year, and the rooms were very affordable. The most expensive room was $145 per night - and this was in the height of the holiday season.
