“Nothing wrong with this Luau!!”

My wife and I went to the Old Lahaina Luau in late September. It was included in the tour package that we purchased and I was surprised that the cost was $97 per person, not including tip.

I read the tripadvisor reviews before we left on our trip and I wasn’t sure what to expect. Now that we have attended in person, I can tell you that there’s nothing wrong with the food and drinks, or the show for that matter. Everything was beyond my expectations. Our waiter was very attentive. You can have as many drinks as you want, if you’re into that, and you can eat as much as you want too. The food is good and considering the number of people attending each night, it’s great. They have an organized way when the time comes for the buffet, so you don’t have to wait in a long line. I think that people who complain about the food on tripadvisor have not attended many large events. The desserts were very good and they were fresh too.

For me, the show was good and didn’t drag on and on.

The only thing that you should be aware of is the luau is on rain or shine. On the night that we attended, it rained a little when we were in line to be seated. There’s no rain cover, so you should bring an umbrella, or something to cover you if rain is in the forecast. Also, ask for table and chair seating. Sitting on the grass with low tables looked uncomfortable.

All in all, if you’re interested in going to a luau, this is the one to go to on Maui.

We went to Hawaii for two weeks in August. We spent one week in Maui with our family and one week on the Big Island with friends. We went to two luaus. The OLL was outstanding. It was a class act all the way. Food, drink, service, and show. The setting was beautiful, there wasn't a bad seat in the house, and the teak furniture was in keeping with this very upscale luau. My two grandchildren(ages 8 and 12) especially enjoyed it. It was educational without being boring and the dancing was phenominal. How do I know all this ? Because I also went to another luau in Kona. The bar was very limited, but we could buy additional drinks for $14, the seating was on plastic chairs and long tables covered in oilcloth. The show had an mc that told cheap jokes at the expense of native Hawaiians. I was offended. There was no service! If you wanted another drink, you got it yourself. The food was all right but the dessert choices couldn't even begin to compare with the tray of macadamia nut tarts, triple chocolate brownies and passionfruit mousse in dark chocolate cups that was brought to our table at OLL. And the Royal Kona Resort Luau was just $20 less than the OLL. Hawaii is expensive but I think we all like to get what we pay for. My family wholeheartedly feels we did at The Old Lahaina Luau.

“Great Service...only ok food”

15 of us went last week to the OLL. The service was excellent, the staff was friendly and helpful. We had great seats, although it seemed that all the seats were good. A few of us couldnt find anything good to say about the food, but some of us did find a few good dishes. The main complaint was the Mahi, it was fishy and horrible. The pork and beef dishes were dry and tasteless. However, the octopus, crab salad, green salad and chicken were excellent. The dessert tray was magnificent. The show was great, not too long, not too short. The dancers were quite talented and the costumes were beautiful. Overall we all enjoyed except that the weather was miserably humid and hot, which of course we dont hold against the luau. The location was right on the water, with a beautiful view of the sunset.

I went to the OLL a few weeks ago with my wife and two young daughters. I went in feeling skeptical about the food because it's a mass feeding, and wasn't sure that the stage performance and ambience would be my cup of tea. Having gone, I would say that the food was slightly better than I predicted, but not much. However, the event takes place in a beautiful setting and is incredibly well managed with the Aloha Spirit in full swing. The dancers were terrific and the narration that accompanied the performers was interesting and informative. My kids did get kind of antsy waiting for the food to become available, so we hung out by the water , took pictures and looked at some of the interesting artifacts on display and crafts for sale. Given the number of people on hand, the workers managed the food situation very well among the many tables, and the waiters were incredibly proactive in getting everybody drinks throughout and helping to navigate the buffet. The pass-around alcoholic drinks were mediocre and the mixed drinks at the open bar were slightly better, but not top shelf. We did leave the luau before it ended because my kids got tired and we all had basically had enough of the experience.

Overall, I would say that this was an event that I enjoyed and am glad I went, but once is enough.

We took our daughter and her friend to Maui last year and decided that they had to experience a luau! We took the to "The Old Lahaina Luau" and they were very impressed! The food was very good, the mahi mahi was moist and tender as was the other items. Our daughter was very impressed with the show, especially the dances with the young gentlemen!
We have been to other luau's before and did not enjoy them as much as this one,, with the others, we had to line up for over 45 minutes, in the bright sun,, and of course, we have to have sunburns already!
The Old Lahaina Luau is the only way to go!
