“We liked Kula!”

On our way down from Haleakala my wife and I stopped here for a respte and early dinner. The place is really great, and a welcome relaxing spot after our hiuke in the crater.
The dining interior is all very attractive wood. Any artisan would enjoy it. The view is great. with giant avocado trees to the left, lots of exotic flora all around. They have a shop that sells neat plants to take home for gifts (palmeria, hibiscus, etc), plus a shop with lots of high end foods, jewelry, etc.
The hosts were all very friendly and helpful. And we had delicious dinners.
Not cheap but worth the price for a Maui visit.

“Nice Restaurant--Great View--Bring Your Sunglasses!”

We never stayed at the hotel so I can't comment on it. We did eat an early dinner after Halealaka. Overall a good (above average) dinner, with above average prices. One whole side of the restaurant is windows with a spectacular view, however, it was facing West and the setting sun was so intense I actually wore my sunglasses! Really, you' think they'd have tinted windows. However, the view and food and atmosphere made for a very nice dinner. I would return if we could find it, its not very well marked and we just happened to stumble into it when trying to turn around. Overall a good experience., would recommend.

“Not your standard Maui Vacation but very charming”

A warning to you. If you want all those nice little amenities that you'll find in Grand Wailea or even some of those nicer hotels in Kihei or Kapalua, then don't stay here. The restaurant is also a bit on the expensive side. This place is for people looking to "get away from it all" including the TV.

That said, this place has a very charming rustic feel, which is exactly what we were looking for (it was our honeymoon). It was very very romantic especially with the fireplace.
It has a wonderful view, especially if you're in one of the Ocean chalets, and the staff was very nice.

Since I am an amateur photographer, it made a great place to make photo trips into the very picturesque Kula countryside. Also, it's location as one of the closest hotels to Haleakala National Park made it very convenient, especially if you don't want to wake up 4 hours before the sunrise to make it up to the peak. And that's just to find a parking spot.

“Loved”

We frequent Maui once a year, and decided that it was time to pay a visit to the Kula Lodge after having missed it for a couple of visits. We had to stop at the Kula Post Office for directions! After heading due North up the volcano for a couple of miles in our Jeep, thankfully we came upon the Lodge...and it had not changed in those few years that we neglected to visit. We paid homage to Mr. Cost prior to a light lunch of shrimp/papaya and ahi. Then we noticed a fabulous pizza being delivered to a nearby table. We determined that a pizza to go for our last night on Maui was in order. My husband began to discuss the crust of the pizza with our waiter...who very quickly explained that 'it is best not to instruct Nick on the makings of our pizza'. Upon further inquisition, we were told that Nick is a mix of chef/artist/America's Most Wanted! How Cool is that?! My husband proceded to take pictures of Nick chopping the fresh basil for our Margarita Pizza baked in an outdoor stone oven over Kiave Wood...it was the best pizza that I have ever had in my life! We enjoyed it as the sun set in Wailea with a bottle of Cakebread Chardonnay. We think that Nick and his pizzas are No Ka Oi! We will never skip Kula Lodge again!

We planned our night at the Kula Lodge primarily based on the location, right near the crater. Had we known that by 7am the next morning our car and another would have windows smashed and personal items stolen we would never have booked it! Our family of 4 (two preteen daughters and myself and my husband) had planned a Pony Express ride up the crater early the next morning so because of location and a very attractive website and pamphlet we booked a $200.00 loft. We arrived at Kula lodge about 7pm in the evening after a long day hiking and swimming along the Hana Highway. We were abruptly greeted when we entered the building and were shown to our room. It seemed as though our casual attire did not seem to fit in with the "upscale" mood the restaurant was trying to portrait. It also seemed like having us check in and be shown to the room was an INCONVENIENCE to the hostess. The room was decorated ok but VERY small and the loft was dusty and the bathroom was dirty with a moldy shower and outdated tiled floor. We inquired about dinner take out from the Kula restaurant and was told that it was probably "too expensive for us" although they would do it and it would probably take a long time and that she recommended us to get pizza down the road. The room was freezing and we were told we could plug in a heater if we wanted.
The next morning after we discover our driver side window smashed on our rental car the manager on duty was not very helpful. He said he saw the smashed window but didn't yet get a chance to call the police! I had to ask him to do that! He offered barely any assistance and no complimentary services except for our two children to sit by the fireplace inside if they choose. No sincere appologies or complimentary credit for the huge inconveniences and loss of property. He basically said that we should try to get a bigger rental car when they come to replace it! Apparently this area of town has been know to have break in's fairly regularly according to the police. Don't stay here or in this side of town unless you have no items of value. Another car was also broken into and a full days worth of shopping items were stolen from the locked trunk. We lost video equipment, and a pocketbook filled with the usual, along with sweatshirts, used film and additional jewelry and personal items. BE WARY WHILE ON MAUI!SKIP THE KULA LODGE UNTIL SECURITY AND THEFT ARE ADDRESSED!
