So, on our second stop on the Hawaii honeymoon, we flew to Maui and drove to Hana (roughly 3 hours on the very scenic Hana Highway).
What an amazing place this was. I'm sorry we only stayed there two nights.
The staff is incredible. They all come from the town of Hana and most grew up there and continue to live in what most will consider one of the most remote places possible in the US. It's gorgeous and peaceful, if quiet.
First, when we checked in, they took us and our luggage by golf cart to our room, with a tour of the grounds. Gorgeous.
When we got to our room, and we were upgraded to a deluxe oceanview cottage, there was a bottle of champagne in the fridge with a note welcoming us and thanking us for choosing them for our honeymoon. Classy. By the way, the fridge was stocked with complimentary water/soda/juice and there was snacks (including banana bread and fruit) in the kitchen. What was a first for me, was that the coffee in the room is whole bean, and they provide a grinder.
They have tennis courts, two pools (the infinity pool has the bar) and an adequate gym (with the best view ever). None of the rooms have tvs or radios, which is fine, as the sound of the waves crashing (we left the big door open all night) knocked us out each night.
The only downside is the bugs. You're smack in the middle of nature, so they're to be expected. While the condition of the grounds is top-notch, the screens in our unit (like other reviews) needed repair and contributed to the problem. We even saw a lizard running around the walls a couple of times. When we called to complain about the bugs and lizard, they told us that the lizard is helpful, he eats the bugs. But they did come on down and spray when we were at dinner the first night.
Recommendation - the food in the main restaurant is pretty darn good, but I'd recommend skipping the Ranch for dinner. It's a small menu and not very good.
The spa is probably the most expensive spa I've every been to, and Cynthia gave the most amazing Thai massage - so it was worth it.
The hotel maintains the Honua Beach nearby - so there are chairs, towels and decent bathrooms there for hotel guest. It's a gorgeous beach with the finest black and white sand.
Overall, we loved the place and the staff was top notch. The setting is perfect for a romantic getaway and we're already thinking about how soon we can plan another trip back. It's a truly special place. We were sorry to leave.
