We stayed at the Sheraton Poipu for five nights, over New Years 2007 (12/30/07 to 1/4/08). We had an excellent time - we were in the smallish garden rooms but the furniture was updated (altho beds are small and bathrooms are older but very clean). There were no upgrades available as the hotel was full for New Years, but it was quiet and big enough. Its hawaii, so you dont spend much time in the room! Our room looked out over fish ponds, which our daughter loved, and we woke to the sound of birds and water. For a garden view room this is very nice. The best part of the hotel is the beach - its one of my favorites on kauai. We booked a cabana for one day (hint - book in advance as they were booked out our first two days), which is a lot of fun and helps when you're coming from the winter and need some shade!
We ate at the Shells restaurant a lot - and I am normally not a hotel restaurant type, but it was a varied menu, not too exorbitant (particularly with our guest 10% off pass and free kids meals). The staff were super friendly and helpful - they made off menu items for my 4 year old (grilled chicken breast and veges etc) and still counted it as free kids meals. The sashimi is the best I have ever had! They have three restaurants that are all basically part of the same space so you can order off any one of the three menus. We also had the breakfast buffet here every morning - again, usually not my scene but the food was excellent and you cant beat the location! I particularly liked the omelette bar, the wide array of tropical fruits, and the changing pancakes, waffles, and french toast.
We went to the New Years Eve Party there too and had a blast - the food was excellent and we loved watching the fireworks. We had to wait a bit to get in even though we had a reservation, but it was all taken care of and we ended up with an awesome table right at the window. Since our daughter had gone to sleep, the waiter opened up the bifold windows so we could see the fireworks without going out to our reserved beach side seating (part of the party package).
We went as part of the SVO promotion, and elected to attend the timeshare sales presentation to get an extra $100 resort certificate (we already got $100 to meet with our concierge) - it was a very low pressure informative presentation altho they scarily nearly talked me into it - thankfully my husband is like a rock so we got out of there without spending our daugters college money. So maybe I shouldnt go to timeshare presentations LOL!
Our daughter went to the Keiki club while we went to the presentation and she loved it. She actually asked to go the next day too! (She didnt, since the whole point was for us to spend time with her but that was cute!) She painted a tshirt that she is proudly showing to everyone now we are home and did a fishing lesson in one of the hotel ponds.
Overall I loved this hotel. There are a few downsides:
- Spa services are pretty lacking. I had a massage, mani and pedi. There is no spa and services are in two different locations, both of which are more like strip mall than sheraton! The treatments were very standard and extremely expensive so I wouldnt recommend it for spa goers.
- The rooms themselves could do with a makeover - the bathrooms are older
- The rooms are small - we had ourselves and our four year old and it was pretty cramped. As other reviewers have noted, there is nowhere to unpack your clothes and the furniture is a little odd for the room (altho new and nice)
- Pool is small and not very clean. garden pool needs some work too and each time we tried it there were no towels. But since we were hitting the beach anyway, we didnt mind the pool situation.
What we loved (and why we would go back in a heartbeat!)
- location is excellent - the beach here is great for swimming and snokelling and we had a monk seal on the beach for two of the days we were here so our daughter entertained herself watching for the slightest movement.
- the staff are super - friendly and helpful without being annoying. You can tell they like working here.
- the restaurants are excellent and not badly priced (considering its a hotel and hawaii) - I love that kids eat free!
- the resort activities are really fun. We did the lei making, which was a lot of fun and informative (altho I wont be giving up my day job - its harder than it looks!) The maitai reception with hula dancing and torch lighting is also really fun. We would have gone to more things but we had too much to do and too little time!
- the Keiki club seemed really good - our daughter loved it and she is not a fan of these things and is a bit clingy at the moment
- super relaxing, romantic even with kids, it doesnt get much better than this!
