“Gorgeous Oceanfront”

We spent four days in a one bedroom corner suite at the Courtyard. It was very spacious, with windows looking out to the ocean, the boardwalk, the hotel pool, and Virginia Beach. We paid $314 a night - more than ever before but felt justified for an oceanfront suite over a summer weekend.

We loved our balcony, the beach access, the hotel pool and pool bar ... how wonderful to be right on the beach and then come back to our comfortable room without crossing streets and driving with sand in our toes.

Our room was very clean when we arrived. Everything we requested (towels, toilet paper) came quickly. With 11 and 12 year old boys enjoying the beach and bringing sand back to our room, I think the maid took a cue from us and didn't go overboard on cleaning. She made our bed, took out the trash, vacuumed and replaced the towels, but didn't always clean our glassware. I didn't bother to complain about it - I felt bad enough about the "beach hut" state of our room and wasn't about to spend my vacation time complaining about a dirty glass or two.

As others have said, there was frequently a short wait for the elevators. We requested a low floor for this reason, figuring we could just climb them to our room but we ended up on the eighth floor anyway. We did stay over the last weekend in June and we never had to wait more than a minute.

As others have said, the fighter jets fly almost directly over the Marriott on their landing approach, low and LOUD. There were less planes on the weekend and most in the evenings during the week. I really enjoyed watching the planes and it was no problem for me to cover my ears if necessary. It seemed to be louder on the pool side of the hotel than the ocean side.

“Loved our stay at the Courtyard North!”

Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront / N 37th St

We stayed at this property in June. We were very pleased that we stayed at this hotel. It's located at the "somewhat quiet" [see Negatives] Northern end of the resort area.

The Positives:
The hotel itself was very well kept and clean, the rooms and common areas were spotless. Housekeeping was phenomenal, and they were consistently done with our room every day before lunch. Towels and washcloths were always replenished. I never felt like we were running out of washcloths or towels. The breakfast buffet was very good. I didn't use the pool, as I went to the beach every day. Parking was a pleasure. We never had to worry about not finding a spot, and we had the choice of parking ourselves or having the car valet parked for free. We took advantage of both during our stay. The view was spectacular! We requested a high floor, and were honored one with an 11th floor room. We were extremely pleased with this. It was so nice sitting out on the balcony, too. We loved it! The air conditioning worked very well in our suite, and we were always comfortable, it was also very comfortable in the hallways leading to the elevators. The internet connection was free, and was speedy. Excellent! The ice machine was right down the hall, and worked very well. It was so nice to have one very close to our room. The front desk staff was extremely helpful, however they did seem to have limited knowledge of the area restaurants. The valets were such gentlemen to us during our entire stay. The last time we were in Virginia Beach we were hounded by timeshare promoters and SCOPES, annoying "take your picture" salespeople roaming the beaches. We had none of these annoyances at this section of the beach.

The Negatives:
The biggest negative of all, and this is NO FAULT OF THE HOTEL, is the Navy jets flying in from the water, over the beach, and then directly over, or to the sides of, the hotel. When they fly over the beach/hotel, the sound is deafening. Granted this may have been an exceptional week of flights, but I think that they fly much too low for the area. We have lived and worked near many military installations and had a house near an airport and have never had to endure such sounds. The only other slight negative is there are only (2) elevators in the entire hotel, and no service elevators at all. There was always a wait for the elevator, but it was never to the point where we were beyond frustrated.

All in all, we really, truly loved this property and the employees who work there. This place is a GEM!

    • Liked — The room and view. Both were spectacular
    • Disliked — The Navy Jets flying overhead. If it weren't for that, our stay would have been perfect! Again, not the fault of the hotel at all.

“Very Uncomfortable Bed”

Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront / N 37th St

May 30, 2008

No problems on check in, even though they were very crowded.

Had breakfast in the cafe twice, it was very tasty, and the service was excellent. Front desk staff was friendly and helpful. That was the good- now, the rest...

The room was one with a jacuzzi, but the on/off knob was not connected, and you had to fiddle with it quite a bit to get it to work. Once it was on, it was hard to turn off.

The towels were extremely old and worn, and very rough. Not what I have experienced at other Courtyards, and not what I expected in a deluxe room.

The bed was like sleeping on a floor- very uncomfortable.

The indoor pool and hot tub- one word- YUCK. There was a clearly visible film on both, and the pool water was a sickly shade of off-green. Nauseating.

Thank you for your imput regarding your stay. We appreciate your comments so we can continue to improve. We are in the process of rebuilding the switches to the inroom hotubs and apparently you stayed in one that we have not yet completed. For this I do apologize.
The beds are about 3 months old and they are the new Courtyard spec pillow top, while we get many compliments on the new beds, some people prefer a softer support. I'm sorry you did not care for it. As to the pool, with heavy bather loads that some times do not shower piror entering please be assured that the chemical levels are monitored hourly.
Thank you again for your imput as this is how we continue improve to be the "Best on the Beach"

“Really nice hotel, great location”

Courtyard by Marriott Virginia Beach Oceanfront / N 37th St

We had a great stay at this hotel. Check in was so fast (5 min max). The location was perfect, at the north end of the beach, but within walking distance of other hotels and restaurants. We got a queen suite room, it was perfect. It had a mini fridge and sink in the living room and sliding glass doors onto a balcony. The rooms were quiet. We called the front desk for extra towels and pillows and they knocked on our door about 5mins later with everything. The front desk also gave us some good tips on where to eat. They suggested Catch 31 at the Hilton. If you go to Virginia Beach you absolutely have to go there! (I wrote a review of the restaurant too) One of the reason i picked the hotel was because of the pool area, which was so nice. They have like 3 or 4 waterfalls in it and it was super clean. I little on the cold side, but probably because it was only May. Overall this was a very nice hotel and we would definately say there again.
