We stayed at Econo Lodge Oceanfront over the 4th of July weekend with our two young children. We had to wait an extra hour and a half to check in because our room wasn't ready when promised. The front desk staff were indifferent and uncaring; they wouldn't greet us, make eye contact, or make us feel welcome in any way, considering we paid over $200 per night for an Econo Lodge. The elevator was extremely slow, and the garage was very tight with limited parking. If you have a larger vehicle, you'll have a hard time parking it. We were worried about driving anywhere because we weren't sure we'd have a parking space when we returned. Often, we got the last spot on the roof! Security was very tight. You needed your room key to enter the building from the garage and board walk. The garage doors were not marked from the hallways, and they closed a gate to the garage at 8:00 each night until the next morning. You then had to beep your horn to enter or exit the garage. The stairs were used by service staff as well, and therefore were very dirty, dark, full of storage items, and smelly. The hallways were dark and not air conditioned, and the maids often blocked the hallway with their carts. The rooms were cleaned pretty well, but we never got replacement toilet paper, cups or tissues, and always had to ask. There were very large numbers of teenagers and gangs roaming the streets and boardwalk, especially at night. We felt very unsafe walking the streets, entering the shops, and walking the boardwalk, and spent most evenings in our room watching TV - a big disappointment. There were groups of 4 or more police officers on every corner, on bike and horseback, and all over the boardwalk, which concerned us even more. The teenagers seemed to rule the streets of Virginia Beach with no parental supervision and little regard for law enforcement. The beach was nice and clean each morning, but by evening it was full of trash and cigarette butts. The local restaurants were very expensive and crowded. The fast food establishments had very poor service, very long lines, and no place to sit. The workers and managers could care less and continued to move as slow as possible. I had to wait 40 minutes are a McDonalds for breakfast. Everything was overpriced since it was near the beach. We actually drove to Lynnhaven Mall twice to eat dinner at restaurants with more reasonable prices. We have stayed at many beach-front hotels in many locations, and this was by far the worst hotel and beach ever. For the money we paid, we were very disappointed with the hotel and Virigina Beach in general, and would definitlely recommended that you DO NOT STAY HERE! Go to any beach in Florida instead - the lodging is much cheaper, the water is warmer, and the beaches are safer and nicer! And, you'll actually be welcomed and shown some hospitality as a guest!
