“Nice enough--but a basic Hampton...”

Hampton Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront North

We selected this hotel based on previous stays at Hampton Inns in other cities. Knowing Hampton Inn to be a reputable chain, and having breakfast included(at the beach this is not a given at all hotels) also influenced our decision. As another reviewer noted, as of July 3 when we checked out, there were still renovations going on on the first floor--this did not impact us at all on the 5th floor. Yes, the elevators were a bit slow and stuffy, but the stairs are easily accessible--we used these mostly going down!) The decor and size of the room were very nice and acceptable. The bathroom is HUGE compared to the Sheraton, even if the bathroom decor is just a little..well....I guess "off" is the term I would use. Doesn't really impact the USE of the bathroom, though! Balcony was just fine, there are a couple of plastic chairs provided (Manager: a small plastic table like at other hotels would be nice though, somewhere to put a drink or coffee while relaxing??!!)

On-site amenities: The breakfast is nice continental--KrispyKreme donuts, muffins, some sort of hot thing that rotates each day (eggs, sausage, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, whatever...) coffee, juice, cereal, yogurt, fruit, bagels, etc.... (The juice and coffee is supposed to be accessible all day long, but some days it wasn't! Also, once the attached restaurant starts serving dinner, going after juice in the corner is just weird!)
T
he pool is what you would get at any other Hampton---small, yet tidy. Not special in any way, but kept clean and sanitary. Good enough if there aren't many people using it, but probably crowded on rainy days???

Lastly--we were completely infested with small black bugs on our check-out morning. I don't necessarily think it was a defect on the hotels part, but when I requested assistance (my kids still needed to shower after their last hurrah in the ocean that morning, and the bugs were all over the bathroom) the gentleman came to my room with multiple cans of bug spray and proceeded to spray the room liberally (as in above our clothes, toothbrushes, luggage, leftover snacks I would have like to have taken on the car trip home....) He then asked me if we had had the outside door open b/c that is where the insects would have come from. Hmmmmm.....paid for an oceanfront room with a balcony....it's a beautiful morning....last day at the beach......Well, yeah, I MIGHT have had the balcony door open?????

Anyway, besides that last incident, our stay was pleasant, and we enjoyed our vacation very much. We usually change hotels every year, so I can't say that I would be back to this one, but if you enjoy Hampton Inns in other cities, this one would be on par with those.

“New Hampton Inn”

Hampton Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront North

On the north end of the beach, quieter here. A pod of dolphins was outside our room all day one day.
The rooms are recently remodeled, but the first floor rooms were not finished as of June 20, 2008. We were on the 7th floor with a beautiful ocean view and the accompanying breeze. Average size room with white, blue and cream decor. The bathroom was a nice size with adequate chelving for three to four guests. The battub itself didn't seem to be able to handle the amount of sand that comes with the oceanfront location. Two elevators that were a little slow at times.
I did use the small exercise room. recumbant bike, treadmill, and elliptical were available and adequate for my needs.
The indoor pool was small, and SANDY. A shower should be put just inside the door to help prevent this.
The staff was helpful and friendly, though I think some of the problems were unable to be answered due to the recent takeover by Hampton and the staff unfamiliarity with the equipment.
Breakfast was adequate, good for children, but 6 days of it was too much for me. It got crowded at 9:30 and they were overwhelmed on the weekend.

“Construction a nightmare”

Hampton Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront North

1 of 5 stars
west virginia
Apr 22, 2008

I just came home from a short vacation in Virginia Beach. The hotel was a big nightmare. We were aware there were renovations being done, but not told all. The lobby and resturant were not close to being finished. The room we had only had one chair in it. Was told the rooms were completely finished. At 7:45 this morning we were woken up to staple machine being used on our floor. Even one of the managers told me he could hear it on the first floor. The parking lot was a nightmare. There were two large cranes in this small lot and storeage bins and dumpsters. We got charged for parking our car and was afraid we were going to get it damaged by equipment on the lot. I do not think it was fair to charge the high price for each night and have to dodge all the construction. Also they tried to charge us more for the last two nights than what they were suppose to. Had to tell them to correct the error. Please if any one is doing construction and does not have enought sense to close until it is completed, please do not stay there. It was not a pleasant experience. Thank you Roger Dilley

“Good value for the money”

Hampton Inn Virginia Beach Oceanfront North

4 of 5 stars
alexandria, VA
Oct 9, 2007

We just got back from a long weekend at this hotel. I was really pleased with how nice the hotel was for the money. There were some problems, but overall thought it was just fine. All the rooms look out over the beach and the location can't be beat- right in the heart of the resort area. We didn't drive our car the entire time we were there. The room was clean and well-maintained. It wasn't fancy but it worked just fine. I thought the bed was pretty uncomfortable though. I loved the balcony. We didn't use the pool but we used room service 3 times and were fairly happy with the service. On Monday morning renovations started in the building. If we hadn't already been awake at 9:00 AM I would have been really annoyed. We brought our dog with us but were disappointed to learn that they're banning dogs as of December 1, 2007. So we probably won't be back.
