My family recently visited the Washington DC area, and decided to avoid the heavy traffic. Springfield, VA is on the outskirts of the metro rail system, so traffic is light and parking is free! The Hampton Inn offers a free shuttle service to the Springfield-Franconia metro station, which is about a five minute drive. We used the shuttle twice, and it was very efficient.
Our overall stay was average because of a few issues.
1. The outside appearance of the hotel is not good. The landscaping outside of the front entrance is full of weeds and unkempt, which is a very poor first impression.
2. Going to our room for the first time (on the second floor) our elevator door only opened half way. We had to manually force the doors to open all the way. Again, a bad first impression. But fortunately this did not occur again during our stay.
3. After relaxing in our room for about an hour, we discovered that the television did not work. The remote did nothing, and the power button on the front of the TV was missing! We were getting ready to leave for dinner, so we phoned the front desk. They promised to fix it or replace the TV before we returned. We came back to find the TV operating. The button was still missing, so we can only assume that the remote needed new batteries. But still, it was handled efficiently and professionally.
4. The room was small and the decor is slightly aged. There were several stains which appeared to be permanent marker on the carpet (probably a child that got crazy while Mom and Dad weren't looking).
But overall, we were still happy with our stay. The room was very clean, including the bathroom. The cleaning staff did a great job of cleaning up after my family each night (two small children), including fingerprints on the tables and mirrors each night. The beds were extremely comfortable, as always with Hampton Inn. Their pillow top mattresses are always superb. The shower was superior as usual, with great water pressure and the adjustable shower head. We had a microwave and mini fridge in the room, which was a wonderful convenience.
The free breakfast is always a plus with Hampton, and this was the typical Hampton Inn breakfast. My only complaint would be the lack of a microwave in the breakfast area, because those biscuits are so much better hot!
The staff was exceptional! Extremely friendly in every situation. And the shuttle service to the metro station is a huge benefit. We never waited more than 5 minutes to go one way or the other.
Overall, this a nice hotel. It is not luxury, but a great value. It is family friendly (and pet friendly, from my observations), clean, quiet, and a good location to experience DC without the traffic hassle!
