“Fine for a stopover”

Quality Hotel Melbourne Airport

3 of 5 stars
Four Marks, ALTON, UK
May 1, 2008

Having read some of the other reviews for this property we did not have high expectations prior to our arrival. Mostly however the hotel was OK and I feel some of the other reviews are not quite fair. This is afterall a mid priced close to airport hotel not a 5 star resort.

On arrival I asked for a room on the ground floor as we had lots of luggage and I did not fancy dragging heavy cases up the stairs to the upper floor. Despite the fact that the hotel had already allocated a 1st (upper) floor room my request was quickly actioned without problem. The hotel was arranged in four blocks around a courtyard with a small swimming pool. It has a restaurant and a bar. Our family room (1 x queen and 2 singles) with the now familiar faced brick walls was very large with full width floor to ceiling windows looking onto the courtyard. The hotel is undergoing a programme of re-furbishment by new owners and our room although perfectly clean, and comfortable did look like it could do with some re-modelling and perhaps some work to remove a faint odour lingering from times when smoking was permitted in the room. The lighting although pleasant was not quite bright enough overall for those who might need to do anything other than read in bed.

The wash-room was a little dim and old-fashioned with the walls covered with unattractive brown tiles. Two basins were housed in a basic vanity unit and the shower sat over a quite old looking spa bath. The shower did pass my ‘Shower Test’ with good amounts of hot water, easily adjustable to a comfortable temperature.

This hotel is very close to a number of fast-food restaurants and car-hire location and is only 5 minutes by car from the terminals at Melbourne Intl. Airport.

For those who do not demand the facilities and familiarity of the Marriots etc. this establishment is perfect for those stopping over near the airport.

“This Place is Awful - Stay Away”

Quality Hotel Melbourne Airport

I stopped in Melbourne for a day at the Australian Open. Unfortunately from the first week of January all of the decent brand hotels (Marriott, Hilton) were fully booked and only their most expenseive suites were still available. Out of desperation I picked the 'Quality Hotel' because it was one of the few with rooms still available - but the name itself should have been a red flag. From the minute their shuttle arrived to pick me up from the airport, it was all downhill. 1) The shuttle driver did not assist me with my luggage, which was especially rude considering that it was starting to rain. He just stood there so I had to put them in the trunk myself. 2) During the short ride to the hotel, he tried to chat with me. But he was rather obnoxious and proceeded to insult me, saying that he thought too many Americans were flying to Australia, and there were too many planes in the air. Hmm, this coming from someone who flew all the way over from Italy just to drive a hotel shuttle bus?? 3) The hotel itself is very run down and old. They had some fancy name for my suite, which turned out to be a low-motel-quality room with an old Hot Tub in the open bedroom - how completely trashy! 4) Their complimentary computer workstation with internet was an old rickety desktop in the lobby, it took many tries and a reboot just to get to the internet, which was Super Slow. 5) Since they didn't offer transportation into the city, what you do is take their shuttle back to the airport, then take the SkyBus airport shuttle into the city. I noticed this happened to other guests as well - whenever guests needed a ride to the airport, the shuttle driver was nowhere to be found and we would have to stand around and wait for them to locate him. 6) The rate was $180 for a night. That is highway robbery considering how nasty this place is, and the only reason they could get away with it is because all the other hotels were full. 7) The shuttle to/from the airport is complimentary. When I was dropped off at the airport the next day, there were several other older American guests also on the shuttle, and as I was arranging my bags on the curb I noticed 2 of the men handing the driver money - and not just a buck or two. Later inside the airport I ended up chatting with an American, turns out she had also stayed at the Quality Hotel with her husband for the Aus Open. And turns out, the driver had told this couple and another couple that there was a fee for the shuttle! He never dared ask me for money, but clearly he took advantage of other Americans to scam a measly 20 bucks or so. First of all, the key lesson to learn when you visit Australia and New Zealand is that you do not tip. Some people/places will try to scam you if they know you're American, but there is no tipping here! And considering that it's advertised everywhere with this hotel that its a complimentary shuttle, it's truly pathetic that the shuttle driver weasels money out of unknowing, trusting tourists. Shame! Looking back, I would rather sleep on a bench at the airport than waste my hard-earned money here.

“Good Value for money”

Quality Hotel Melbourne Airport

The Quality Hotel at Melbourne Airport is also known as the Tullamarine Airport Motor Inn. We booked a deluxe suite via the hotel's website after a google search. Our reason for selecting this establishment was to provide close accomodation to Melbourne airport for an early morning checkin. Complimentary shuttle service was also a prerequisite.
Our deluxe suite for 3 adults is the same as a double room - Some poetic licence is taken with the room description.
The room was clean with a double and single bed, tea and coffee making facilities were provided and the bathroom had a toilet, shower over the bath and toiletries provided. Our room had a shortage of towels but this was quickly remedied upon request. There is an outdoor pool and jaccuzzi available to guests but the water was too cold for us to participate during our stay. There is a small fountain in an enclosed coutyard, but was empty due to water restrictions in the Melbourne area.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Whilst we didnt use the bar or dining room they appeared clean and well patronised.
We chose to select takeaway chinese from the nearby "Dragon Fly" restaurant which provides generous portions.
The shuttle service picked me up from the airport after returning the rental car and delivered me back to the hotel and on the morning of our departure took us to the international terminal. Transport from the airport to the hotel is on request and to the airport on the hour until 11am and then on request.
The tariff was very reasonable and we would recommend this establishment as an overnight stopover. If we were staying longer then a larger suite would have been preferable. The hotel also provides long term parking ( up to 14 days free) if you stay the first night at the establishment. A great saving for travellers leaving Melbourne.

“Very handy to airport”

Quality Hotel Melbourne Airport

very handy to Melbourne Airport. The hotel provides a free shuttle to and from the airport. The staff were very helpful, esp as we had oversize luggage.
This is more of a motor Inn rather than a Hotel as such
Rooms were of Typical Motor Inn/ Motel standard.
Bathrooms were a little dated but very clean and serviceable.
restuarant was nothing spectacular, but again OK for what was required.
A great hotel if you are getting an early flight out the next morning.
Swimming pool is great on a hot day too.

Would not use as a holiday base, more suited to those with an early flight or late in/ or business base.
Basic convention/training facilities on site.
