Rockbridge County is one of the most beautiful, rural places left in Virginia. House Mountain Inn itself, tucked right into Big House Mountain, is a traditional mountain lodge, that doesn't try to compete with the reason it was built where it is - to allow guests find a place among the trees or the sky to recall who you want to be. This was my third visit in the past year to House Mountain Inn. Everytime I leave, I am already planning my return before I'm down the mountain.
The Irvines are amazing - if you need privacy and quiet to think, write, or hike; then privacy is what you get. If you come to House Mountain seeking adventure and fellowship, they will help you arrange wilderness excursions into the Jefferson National Forest on horseback. With six miles of well-maintained hiking trails around House Mountain you can hike easily and safely alone or with friends. When you come back from a day of hiking or riding, soak in your private hot tub for awhile!!
The chef is very attentive and creative. Breakfast is your choice of continental or from a menu selection. I try to choose from the menu, unless I'm leaving early for riding. Breakfast (pumpkin pancakes, made to order omelettes, strawberry french toast, belgian waffles w/ peaches) is so yummy and filling that you won't need lunch. If you do though, ask the staff to pack you a box lunch and they will make you a healthy, delicious, and ample lunch - which they did for us to take on our trail ride into the national forest (we couldn't eat it all!). Dinners are served in a simple, but elegant dinning room that overlooks the mountains. I am always stuffed by the time dessert comes, but it's too good to pass up.
House Mountain Inn has become my favorite home away from home. I love it; my family does, too. House Mountain Inn is a special place in one of the few undeveloped areas of Virginia. The location is stunning; to me, there are few places left in the world like Rockbridge County. But, it's the Irvines and their family (Jamie, Tim, Carrie, Jeff, Katie) who make this place so special. House Mountain Inn is a family-run business. Like any family-run business, that business will reflect the family itself. The Irvines are a kind, honest, generous, hard working family. They've built House Mountain Inn with these values as much as anything else.
