“It didn't stink.”

West End Hotel Dallas

Houston, Texas

I'm not crazy about downtown two star properties, but this was nice inside. Mass transit trains on one side, lots of city buses on the other with a variety of inner-city urbanites coming and going at all hours. The street noise was very bad, even on the 24th floor. The historic Book Depository is close by along with restaurants in the west end area.

The room was OK, average for what I expect at a Hilton/Hampton Inn 2 star property. Parking garage was about 10bux extra per night I hadn't expected that.

The AC didn't work very well but it was acceptable.

“What's the problem?”

West End Hotel Dallas

4 of 5 stars
Los Angeles, California

We stayed there for a night en route to another city in Texas, and I have absolutely no complaints. Yes, there are a lot of people hanging around the place, but as another reviewer pointed out, the hotel shares the block with a transit hub and most of these people are harmlessly waiting for the train or bus. I never once felt threatened or unsafe. It was an easy walk to the Sixth Floor Museum (one of the highlights) and plenty of restaurants, and there were numerous other points of interest within a short drive, including the bar/club/young person Mecca of Deep Ellum. Breakfast is included, and I have no complaints about the quality of the food. We had limited contact with the hotel staff (we're not very needy; we pretty much only dealt with them at check-in and check-out), but they seemed pleasant and professional. Comfy bed, great view at night (cool skyscrapers), good location, and terrific price. Would I stay here again? You bet.

“Not for tourists”

My husband and I spent a week touring Texas and stayed at this hotel for one night. We were very disappointed with the location, the West End has really gone down hill since we were last here about 10 years ago. The hotel itself is average and the staff was pleasant, but not very helpful when we asked questions about the area. It is a short walk to the JFK museum which is a safe walk during the daytime but I would NOT venture out at night without a cab, even the short walk to the West End restaurants. We were approached by at least 3 homeless people on our two block walk, and while they did not threaten us, we certainly felt nervous. This is the first time we have been disappointed with the Hampton Inn and feel they would be better off moving out of this area all together!

“Average in many ways”

I have stayed at this hotel several times and again last night (all for business purposes). This hotel is average in a lot of ways and above average in few. The rooms are average and are clean for the most part. In my experience, the front desk help is "pot luck." I have experienced very pleasant help and extremely rude help. This last stay was "average" at best but the hotel was booked so there were lots of people to help. The breakfast is good and included in the price. Parking is secure/convenient and comparable with other parking lots in the area ($7/day).

One thing I would disagree with regarding a prior posting is the homeless population around the hotel. I have stayed at the this hotel four times in the last year or so and I have never experienced anyone being "aggreesive." You may get approached by someone seeking some change but I have experienced that in a majority of the cities I've visited. I have never witnessed any homeless person coming into the lobby or breakfast area and seriously doubt the staff would allow this to happen. There are lots of people around the hotel but this is only because it is very close to the mass transit rail/bus stop. This results in people having to wait for buses/rails at these locations. I would hate for someone to think there is an overwhelming number of homeless people loitering around the hotel because there isn't. I have walked around at night (even last night) and never felt in fear of being victimized.

There is a prior experience I would like to share and this is the worst I have experienced at this hotel. During a stay several months ago, I checked in around 9:30 PM and was given a room. When I entered the room, the bed was unmade, food was left on the floor, and the bathroom was disgusting. I called and explained that the room had obviously not been cleaned and asked for another room. I was told an employee would come up to my room in 5 mintues to bring me a new room key. After approximately 25-30 minutes of sitting in this filth, I called the front desk to check the status. After another 10 minutes, the employee finally arrived with the new room key. I made my way to the new room and entered the room. I found toiletries in the bathroom and clothes hanging in the closet (obviously someone else's room!!). Luckily the person was not present. I immediately returned to the front desk and demanded a clean UNOCCUPIED room. After several minutes and a lot of attitiude from the employee, I received a clean, empty room. Other than this, the stay was uneventful.

All in all, the hotel is average. It is doubtful I would stay here if I were paying for the room.

Stayed here in june with a large tour group. The hotel itself is fantastic.Rooms are huge and very posh, breakfast is brilliaint and the free internet is a bonus.Staff were very freindly and nothing was too much trouble BUT as a lot of people have said this hotel is in a very unsafe area.Would not go anywhere unless with a large group.Went shopping on a sunday(bad idea) as dallas only seems to be famous for the assaination of jfk.Absolutely no shops were open,no cafe's and we struggled to find anywhere to eat for lunch. The jfk museum(formely the texas school book depository)is very interesting and well worth a visit.Unfortunately we were accosted by homeless people on the way to our hotel and this was in broad daylight.Went to the mesquite rodeo that night-abosulutely brilliant.Went out for coffee that night but once again struggled to find anything open.Overall a great hotel but if you can bypass dallas-too boring!
