My husband and I stayed at the Decameron Los Cocos just last month, from Feb. 16 to the 23, and absolutely loved it. I had read a lot of reviews on the resort, and most of them were accurate (except the one from buddy saying he hated it, it sucked). We were treated like royalty from the moment we got on the bus from the PV airport. We found the staff most helpful, very clean (exceptionally clean!!!! The people serving the food all wear face masks, and the floors are continually being mopped, almost every 15 minutes.) The first day there I found the odor of the disinfectant a little strange, and there was a smell of burning in the air, but I know I have an overly sensitive nose, and within a day or so I became accustomed to it. In fact, on the second day we took the bus into Puerto Vallarta, and upon returning I felt so happy to be out of the big city, that the smells welcomed me back!
Be warned about the Pina Coladas...they are VERY strong, and very good. I overindulged the first night, no need to say more.
Again, the staff was very helpful and kind!
The food was good, with a lot of variety. I was eager to try the Mexican dishes, while my husband tended to stay with the meat and potatoes fare. No worries, it was all available. We tried the ala carte restaurant one night, and it was delicious, but we preferred to pick and choose from the buffet. It was so clean and safe, and delicious. I work in the food industry, and have my food safe certicate, so am overly conciencious about such matters...not to worry.
The pool was a little too cool for our liking, I have to be honest. Actually the week we were there was not really hot, but very nice. There are a lot of dogs on the beach, but like the majority of Mexican people, they are friendly. I wanted to take them all home with me (the dogs, I mean).
The main thing I noticed about Mexico is the friendliness of everyone. One afternoon my husband went to play tennis with a guy he met, and I spent the time at the beach, with my pina colada and book. Not once did I feel unsafe!!!! Yes, the beach vendors come up and want you to look at their wares, but they are not aggressive or nasty.
We went on a whale watching tour, booked with Miguel, and it was amazing. We were served a wonderful lunch (all seafood, be warned, if you don't like seafood. But then, who doesn't???)
and got to go snorkelling and swimming. At one point two humpback whales rode shotgun with our boat, breaching and showboating all the way. About one hundred porpoises also gave chase, amazing shots. We saw sea turtles and many strange and marvelous birds. That was a fantastic day!
If you go to Guaybitos, be sure to check out Raymond and Kelli's ATV and scooter tours, just down the street from the resort. We rented a scooter from there one day, then a couple days later went on an ATV tour with Kelli. The scooter trip was awesome: you get to take off on your own. The ATV trip was guided, but it was cool too. Kelli and her husband are Canadians who moved to Guayabitos about 3 years ago and know their stuff. She showed us the back country, which is what I really wanted to see.
We got really dusty and dirty, just to warn you.
That afternoon we rented horses from the horse rental place just down the road (yep, it's all there!!! ). For $28 each we got a guided tour up into the hillside of the little town north of Guayabitos. Our guide, Savarro, did not speak much English, but was very friendly and a good horseman. We got on well. He asked if we wanted to gallop, and we did!!!! Had a great time, and got a lot of beautiful shots.
If it sounds as if we were not in our resort a lot, well we were out of it a lot, but the time in it we very much enjoyed. The drinking time is from sometime in the morning to 11 pm, which may not sound late, but the disco is open until 2am, and we were in one of the bars until after 12 am, and they still served us. It makes for a quieter night, which is nice, because the cleaning crew is up early. I sleep with earplugs anyway, and because we were only there a week and wanted to experience as much as possible, we loved being up early.
Most of the people in the resort were Mexican or Canadian, and all very friendly. I would go back there in a heartbeat. This resort, this town, has such a small-town feel and pulse, who wouldn't feel at home? Well if you are a big-city partier-type person, you might. Otherwise, we're good to go!!!
