“Not beautiful - just typical beach hotel”

Crowne Plaza Resort Hilton Head

Jul 22, 2008

We stayed at this hotel 5 - 7 July 08. When we arrived the weather was dull and raining (a little bit of sunshine always gives a better first impression). The drive up to the hotel was pretty but the hotel itself was rather ugly from the front. When the English Manager heard we were there he came and said "hello" to fellow countrymen, which was a nice touch. Our rooms, sea view (only just if you strained your neck a little) were on the top floor and overlooked the pool. They were ok but cheaply furnished and a little battered for a 4* hotel. We were expecting a little bit of luxury for the price we had paid. To buy breakfast was expensive so we ate out. The bar was nice though. We experience the fire alarm too ... we made it down to the ground floor and assembled around the pool area. We never saw ANY staff!!! Bit scarey if this was a real alarm. No one knew when to go back in or where to wait so, tired and hot, everyone found a sun bed and waited for assistance ... and waited, and waited and waited...we still never saw any staff. When we finally decided it was safe to go back in (still no sighting of staff) we went back to our room. I could hear the service staff, almost immediately, pushing pre-printed letters, apologising for any inconvenience, under the doors of rooms. This made us think that it was a regular occurance. The hotel has a decent sized pool but the sunbeds were quite poor and didn't look very clean so we went down to the lovely beach instead.

“Classy....its not.”

Crowne Plaza Resort Hilton Head

2 of 5 stars
Alpharetta, GA
Jul 8, 2008

The best overall summary I could give was that the stay was seriously lacking class. We've stayed at many hotels from the cheap to the luxury. I would consider myself pretty easy going and I generally give a lot of room for what I call incidentals and accidentals. When we booked our stay, we had the impression of a high-end hotel with the level of services that usually come with that type of price. While the room was nice and the grounds were pretty, I felt like we were only paying for the priviledge of being there (and that annoyed me).

The hotel seemed lightly staffed. Nobody ever bothered to ask if we needed anything. We only saw the Consierge once when checking in....so, that was not an option either. To be fair, nobody was rude....they just all seemed too outta sight to put forth any extra effort.

The hotel has no concept of the special things that nice hotels will offer whether a beach, international, city or airport hotel) I've stayed at nice hotels for a THIRD of the price which offered a free bottle of water, or a few special items for the stay.. Instead, for a garden room, we had a nice card explaining that the bottled water they put in the room was $5.00. To me, that just seemed kinda tacky (especially, for the price)....but very representative of the type of experience.

There was no complimentary breakfast nor even a discount for breakfast. Instead, you could get the buffet for $15 or if you weren't terribly hungry, you could pay $6 for a bowl of cereal. No discounts for Priority Club members....matter of fact, alot of things were "excluded" from that discount.

The beach was OK....but a long trek from the hotel. I assume there was no connection with the lifeguards and the hotel staff. I assume that there was no hotel staff even at the beach....which I thought was part of what we were paying such a high price for....We paid $32 for a day rental of beach chairs (just something else that I am used to seeing "complimentary" but was not).

The cleaning staff "forgot" to clean our room. Instead of trying to make amends, they just said "oh sorry". Wow...I can't say THAT was very "classy". Generally, I believe its not JUST how perfect service is....its how they respond when they screw up.

As far as our room....it was nice, but certainly not the view I expected. We paid more for a "garden room" which equated to a room overlooking the pool and a palm tree blocking any real view (which was probably better since I don't equate viewing the pool as a "garden view"). I think if I was going to charge guests that much for a garden view....I would at least plant something a little more "gardenlike" in that area.

We did get two complimentary drink tickets for the "house drink" whatever that was. We never found the lounge...granted, we did not spend a lot of time looking, but the information was never volunteered (we had to ASK where our room was located!).

Other issues:

Dockers never seemed to be open. So much for a nice frozen drink close by ...moreover, the vending machines on our floor were inoperable. We relied on our drinks in our cooler. I felt like we were at a Motel 6 (and thats generally what I expect at one too!)

Fire alarm went off at 5AM...no real explanation why. We did get a note saying "sorry"....again, no other effort for the guests like coffee or water, etc. (I'm not blaming them for the alarm obviously....but I've stayed at a Hotel after a major earthquake and the staff went out of their way to try to keep their guests comfortable).

Traffic was a nightmare....ok, I can understand that tourists and traffic go together. But the attempts to protect the island seemed more to cause nightmares for visitors (which I can't see being pleasant for the locals).

I doubt we will be back....I have so many other beaches that are quite pleasant and classy without overcharging or nickling and diming you.

Oh....I will say that I loved the idea of the bike trails EVERYWHERE.

Disappointed.....at best.

“Wonderful Hotel”

Crowne Plaza Resort Hilton Head

5 of 5 stars
Augusta, Ga
Jul 6, 2008

This trip was a first to Hilton Head with my family of four (two small children) and we loved it! The Crowne Plaza hotel grounds are relaxing and beautiful. The back of the hotel opens to an outdoor pool, snack cabana and a pretty walkway through 2 small lagoons with hammocks and chairs along the way to rest and watch the local wildlife. Just beyond this walk is the boardwalk directly onto one of the nicest beaches in South Carolina, especially in the morning when it is almost private (though it is plenty busy closer to noon and afternoon). The large indoor pool is heated and heavenly. We swam for about 2 hours one afternoon to avoid the sun and had the pool to ourselves the whole time. The rooms were nice and we loved that our couch made into another pull-out bed. Sounds from the hallway were just a little noisy but I didn't notice any sounds at all coming from the neighboring rooms through the walls. We had the kids taking 2 naps a day and never had any trouble with noise. The main way to access upper level rooms from the pool/beach is through the lobby and cover ups and shoes are required. Had I known, I would have invested in a nicer cover-up. This was a wonderful trip and we will definitely return to this hotel.

“Excellent Stay”

Crowne Plaza Resort Hilton Head

5 of 5 stars
North West England
Jul 4, 2008

Stayed here 2nd week of June and can not say enough about the place.

This is the second time that we have stayed at the resort, the first time was June 2006, and I can not correlate between what I have found on my two visits and the negative reviews on here from some people that I have read in that time frame.

Lots complain about the 'resort facilities fee' of $15 per night and say they do not understand what it is for.

If you check the table in your room then you will find a comprhensive list of the 11 'facilities and amenities' that it covers.

On both occassions that we have stayed we have found everything from the facilities, comfort, cleanliness and staff to be first class while the grounds are fabulous and the beach only a very short walk away.

FWIW we stayed in a King Leisure room on the third floor and it was spotless from start to finish.

I would not hesitate in recommending this resort to anyone thinking of staying here..........just enjoy.
