We have stayed in more guesthouses and B&B's than I can remember. Some have admittedly been in more exotic destinations but we can't think of a one that has been run any better. Our experience has been sometimes you can tell when the owners embark on this business for the extra cash or as a hobby business, but this place had the air of a professionally run hotel, albeit small. Everything was first rate, new mattresses, new linens, new towels and I could go on and on about the personal service. Other reviewers have voiced their preferences on breakfast, very much a subjective thing. Personally, we liked the extensive variety as opposed to one over the top entree that might leave some unhappy.
The owner Tom with the help of his nephew Nick, took a great and personal interest in helping us plan our outings and the sincere suggestions probably contributed to the highlights of the trip. We followed every dinner recommendation and thought every meal was a home run, except for one (which was in nearby Lake Placid.)
There will be a next time, that is certain. If you are a dog lover, you will ADORE Pharfel and his galpal Cleo (incredibly cute Boston's.) They rarely make appearances in the common space so you will have to ask.
The one negative...don't go in November (dreary and barren.) They more than made up for it by keeping the fireplaces a blazing! Although as I write this the Weather Channel said Saranac Lake has a foot of snow. That's more like it!
