Booked the hotel on spec, as we (myself, missus & 8YO) needed a quiet break away from hustle of N.Y. during a recent trip. Got peace & quiet alright. Well away from everything, including shops/nightlife etc.

Great atmosphere (we stayed for 3 days around Xmas time) with the open fireplace etc, and plenty of places to relax.

The bar & restaurant were very reminiscent of bygone eras with lots of old photos on the walls etc. and full of atmosphere. Restaurant is closed on Sunday night/s, so be prepared to sit at the bar having a feed...(great experience for my 8 Y.O...she absolutely loved sitting with Mum & Dad, acting all grown-up. Her, not us)

There seem to be a lot of local people/travel people from nearby airport tend to stay there, and if you can get into a conversation with them, you can pick up a lot of local history as well.

Rooms are extra spacious, and the beds are huge with the adjustable comfort settings etc...just to help you get a great nights' sleep.

The place is a bit away from everything, but staff were extremely helpful with organising transport (plus the free shuttle to & from Ronkonkoma Station) to the huge Smithaven Mall and a few other places, providing it's on their way.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and an excellent opportunity to re-charge our batteries for a few days.

For $69/night, it was just fine enough. Clean hotel, friendly staff...slow bath drain, only one coffee mug, typical hotel off interstate.

The location of the hotel is great - right of interstate and close to the airport and the LIRR. The staff were friendly, but the quality of the rooms subpar. My initial room was clean, but I had immediate issues with the AC. I arrived late and just wanted to sleep, but contacted the front desk the next morning. It was still not working upon my arrival after my meetings and I contacted the desk again and someone was at my room within 5 minutes. He agreed it was not working and I was promptly given another room (this one with a sleep number bed). The AC worked well, but in the middle of the night it started making horrific noises. It was cool that night - so I turned it off and opened the window. Needless to say - I would expect more from a Radisson. Workout equipment was not properly funcitoning. I also was not able to access the internet the entire time - had to go to a Panera to do so.

Clean rooms, very helpful staff. I'm not a huge fan of the "sleep number" bed though.

“Not What It Once Was...”

Holtsville Plaza Hotel

This was a Best Western before it became a Radisson. Let me re-phrase that – this was a reasonably priced hotel with very friendly and accommodating staff before it became the current over-priced bore that it is now.

We stayed here for one night to attend a family wedding. Our family has had several weddings to attend in the area many years ago – before the hotel changed hands. The staff was once warm and friendly, as was the atmosphere of the bar/restaurant. They even had a decent indoor pool (now removed).
For our most recent stay, we needed a handicapped room for one of the elderly wedding guests (she uses a “walker”). It turns out that the brilliant designers have located these rooms furthest from the elevators (quite a walk for an elderly disabled person – approx. 150 feet). They also don’t fully understand the concept of easy access for the disabled in regard to the bathroom. It had a standard size high-walled tub with a flimsy plastic and aluminum bench so a person could theoretically move in and out of the tub – which did not serve its intended purpose. Yet the regular room had a large easy-to-enter, low-lip shower stall – maybe these should have been put in the rooms for the disabled? At least the regular rooms are decent – but not worth the cost.
We only had contact with the front desk and restaurant staff. The front desk clerk was cold and unfriendly – and when we expressed our dismay with the handicapped room, we were not given a simple apology (yes – that would have sufficed), but rather a nasty attitude. The other front desk clerk intervened and was at least apologetic. There was also a discrepancy with the room rates. When I booked the rooms directly with the hotel, I was quoted one price (approx. $160 per room per night). I received a confirmation number, and had the forethought to take the name of the clerk, time, and date. Thankfully I did, because they attempted to charge me a higher room rate. When I told them of the issue, they were reluctant to believe me until I brought forth the information that I recorded. Had I not had this information, I believe they would have stood fast in their position. The restaurant server was friendly. However, the food was overpriced. The food was reasonable – but equally good food could be found a short trip away for half the price. The atmosphere of the restaurant was particularly glum and depressing.

I think this was the last time we’ll be using this facility. It’s a shame, as it was once a much nicer place. Yes, they made some renovations (not all good – they removed the pool), but shine and sparkle (and glorified inflatable beds) does not a good hotel make. A warm, inviting, and friendly atmosphere is the heart of a good hotel.
