This was a Best Western before it became a Radisson. Let me re-phrase that – this was a reasonably priced hotel with very friendly and accommodating staff before it became the current over-priced bore that it is now.
We stayed here for one night to attend a family wedding. Our family has had several weddings to attend in the area many years ago – before the hotel changed hands. The staff was once warm and friendly, as was the atmosphere of the bar/restaurant. They even had a decent indoor pool (now removed).
For our most recent stay, we needed a handicapped room for one of the elderly wedding guests (she uses a “walker”). It turns out that the brilliant designers have located these rooms furthest from the elevators (quite a walk for an elderly disabled person – approx. 150 feet). They also don’t fully understand the concept of easy access for the disabled in regard to the bathroom. It had a standard size high-walled tub with a flimsy plastic and aluminum bench so a person could theoretically move in and out of the tub – which did not serve its intended purpose. Yet the regular room had a large easy-to-enter, low-lip shower stall – maybe these should have been put in the rooms for the disabled? At least the regular rooms are decent – but not worth the cost.
We only had contact with the front desk and restaurant staff. The front desk clerk was cold and unfriendly – and when we expressed our dismay with the handicapped room, we were not given a simple apology (yes – that would have sufficed), but rather a nasty attitude. The other front desk clerk intervened and was at least apologetic. There was also a discrepancy with the room rates. When I booked the rooms directly with the hotel, I was quoted one price (approx. $160 per room per night). I received a confirmation number, and had the forethought to take the name of the clerk, time, and date. Thankfully I did, because they attempted to charge me a higher room rate. When I told them of the issue, they were reluctant to believe me until I brought forth the information that I recorded. Had I not had this information, I believe they would have stood fast in their position. The restaurant server was friendly. However, the food was overpriced. The food was reasonable – but equally good food could be found a short trip away for half the price. The atmosphere of the restaurant was particularly glum and depressing.
I think this was the last time we’ll be using this facility. It’s a shame, as it was once a much nicer place. Yes, they made some renovations (not all good – they removed the pool), but shine and sparkle (and glorified inflatable beds) does not a good hotel make. A warm, inviting, and friendly atmosphere is the heart of a good hotel.
