“Too weird for me.”

Ok, I don't usually like to write negative reviews because someone 's livelihood depends on what I write. If you are an adult and not spooked by old things...then stay here. If you are OK with smarmy people giving you a thirty minute spiel about where your room is, how to open the room door, and every little nit-picking thing...then stay here.

If on the other hand, old things bother you and creepy old rooms bother you...go down the road to the Howard Johnson or Holiday Inn Express.

Ok, I have to say that "Tom" was just a little too smarmy for my liking. We arrived late and had about an hour to find something to eat or forget it because they were about ready to roll up the sidewalks. Anyway, Tom insists on escorting us to our room, making a big presentation about opening the door (mainly because the door wouldn't open properly because it drags on the floor...some call that charm...I call it old and worn out.) Don't interrupt Tom because apparently he's like a tape recorder and he has this rewind button that rewinds everytime you interrupt him. I would have literally paid several hundred dollars at that moment for one of those little yellow plastic baseball bats just to pop him in the head. Just point me in the direction of my room, let me relax and go get something to eat because if I have to eat the emergency "beanie-weanies" tucked away in the car. Tom, I'm really not going to be very nice. Anyway, he insisted on taking the next 20 minutes of my life to explain things to me. Not necessary Tom!!!! Don't ask a question, because the only answer you will get is, "I'm going to get to that." In the time it took him to say, "I'm going to get to that "he could have answered the question. Did not like him one little bit!

The only thing good I can say is that it is within walking distance of everything...the lake, the Hall of Fame and all the shops. Would I ever stay here again? No. It was the most reasonably priced accommodations around, but really folks spend a little more money and get something a little nicer than this.

Overall, we were delighted with this inn--the staff took great care of us, from the friendly greeting and help with luggage provided by the manager and the free upgrade to a bigger room at check-in to the service at the restaurant/bar in the basement (it was like being in someone's rumpus room in the 1970s, which we thought was really fun--if that's not your thing, don't go!). It's the quietest room we've stayed in in a long time (except for someone with a really loud motorcycle who apparently finishes work in the area between 9 and 10 p.m.), and parking and breakfast are free; the location is perfect. We watched a DVD (free at the front desk) in the comfort of our room; the decor is very plain, but we had stayed the previous night in a fancy, stuffy, Victorian B&B in the Canandaigua area, and we, by far, preferred the atmosphere at the Tunnicliff Inn. Read as many reviews for this place as you can before staying--ultimately, most of the things travelers don't like about it have to do with personal taste, so if you're not concerned about how many pictures are hanging on the walls in your hotel room, go for it! The only thing we really were disappointed in was the size of the shower stall--tiny!!--but it's an old place--what are ya gonna do?

“Bad, bad, bad”

The Tunnicliff Inn sounds quaint and charming on its web site, and boasts all kinds of amenities such as DVD players and WiFi. But when we arrived, we found a very run-down place, with lumpy mattresses, horribly out of date bathrooms, and foam cushions on the toilet seats. I refused to take a shower because I was uncertain about the cleanliness of the bathroom. Definitely pass this one up, even if it is close to the Hall of Fame.

“Charming Old Inn”

Tunnicliff Inn

My husand and I and our 7 year-old stayed at the Tunnicliff Inn for one night last week and we enjoyed it very much. The staff was very friendly, and because the larger executive king room was available, they put us up in that room at no additional charge. True, it's not the Ritz, as another reviewer said, but it was built like in 1804 or 1806 and that's what makes it charming. It's an old inn and it has quirks, but our room was spacious and they provided a small frig and a coffeemaker, and our bathroom had two terry robes. Breakfast was included and it was delicious! Homemade cinnamon rolls, an egg dish, potatoes, cereals, fruit, and juice and coffee. And it was just around the corner from the Hall of Fame, so the locale was ideal. No complaints here. I'd stay here again.....

“Can't beat the location....be patient with the 200 yr old home”

The Tunnicliff is in a perfect location. Everything in Cooperstown is within 3 blocks of this hotel.
I found the hotel to be homey and had some nice touches. Some people in my party had some complaints, but most thought it was quaint and suitable.
It's true the decor isn't what I would pick, and there were some quirks...but it's a 200 yr old home, and is going to have some small issues (like small bathrooms, slanted floors).
The breakfast was very good, especiallay considering it was included. They also have digital cable, and a selection of dvds at the front desk for no charge.
It's not the Ritz, but for a small charming town, this is a good pick. Just go in with an open mind, and try not to complain about every little thing that isn't what you expect in a normal hotel.
