My BF and I stayed at this hotel with a group of other folks who had driven up from New York City to attend a show at the Spool MFG art gallery in nearby Johnson City. We were impressed by the beautiful photos on the website and the relatively inexpensive price of the hotel.
The lobby, common room (with television and a computer set up for free internet access), and meeting room on the ground floor are quite lovely, as is the mezzanine sitting area and dining room (which seems to only be used for special functions).
Our room was on the 5th floor, right by the elevator. The room was TINY and had a view of the lower level roofs (aka NO view). We had a queen sized bed that took up almost ALL of the available space, it was literally standing room only and we were only two small people! The space between the entertainment center (with TV only) and the foot of the bed was less than a foot of space! We called the front desk to inquire about the size of our room and they said that all the rooms were about that size.
We visited our friends who had booked a two double bed suite and their room was not nearly as cramped as ours was, but it was cavernously dark!
The bathrooms were clean, but with appliances that were a bit dated.
During the day the street the hotel is on was deserted, but when we arrived back to the hotel around 11pm on Saturday, the bars across the street were in full swing--with hundreds of (underage) college students loitering the streets, staggering in and out of the bars, chasing after each other and causing general drunken mayhem.
There is a bar that is alongside the hotel driveway, which means that you might encounter drunk college students when you are trying to get into the hotel itself. A girl came out of the hotel just as we were entering and she slurred to us that they "wouldn't let us use the bathroom." The next morning there was vomit on the curb.
We heard from our friends that on Friday night Girls Gone Wild had been filming in one of the bars across the street and around 3,000 kids had shown up.
Luckily the police shut down the street to avoid anyone getting run over. Unfortunately that means if you are driving your car and have not already checked in (there's a parking lot on the opposite side of the hotel that you can drive directly into), it might be a problem trying to pull into the hotel driveway to check in and load out.
The continental breakfast was made up of pre-packaged oatmeal that you had to make yourself, bagels, Tropicana bottled juices, granola bars and coffee. Not a freshly made food product in sight, which was very disappointing. There was no real area to eat breakfast other than the mezzanine sitting area, so I just took the few semi-appetizing items to our room to eat. Later we got a great $5 breakfast at Chris' Diner down the street.
The hotel is fine, the service is OK, and most importantly the price was right. I didn't have a horrible experience there, but I've definitely have better.
The hotel is near an excellent restaurant that a local told us about called the Lost Dog. Definitely check it out if you stay at a hotel in the area. It's run by two Manhattan transplants and definitely has a cool, hip vibe.
