As we walked into this restaurant I was excited by both the atmosphere and the special board. Cool collages of cuban art and news were on the walls and an airy white curtain separated the bar from the dining area. However, my party was soon to be incredibly disappointed.
On the drink side of things: Fearing the mojitos were of the new pre-made mixes that many bars are using, we asked the waitress if the mojitos were freshly mixed (ie. the sugar and lime juice mixed in the glass and the mint crushed). Her answer was. "honey, of course we mix each one, this is a Cuban place!" While they took some time to come out, our first round was quite good--I had original. However, when we ordered another round, my mojito came out with over an inch of unmixed sugar on the bottom. So, we sent that back. She returned with a mojito that had a 2 inch square--a thick, coagulated, gelatinous chunk floating on top. First; this was disgusting. Second, this certainly wasn't a fresh mix of sugar and lime in the glass! So, we showed that to the waitress who returned with yet another too sugary no mint mojito. In the meantime, the woman across from us had received a glass of water with a large tortilla triangle floating in it.
On the food side of things: Having seen several other tables with guacomole and plaintain chips, we ordered that along with empanadas, and spring rolls as appetizers. The beef empanadas were promising with raisins and full taste as were the spring rolls. However, the guacomole was truly spoiled! Horrible--it singed my tongue and was a warm, loose mess. We heard the man behind us say to his waitress. "I own a restaurant and I'm telling you this guacomole has gone bad. It is spoiled." My party was so fed up with the service, we did not return it. He, on the other hand did return it only to get the same plate back when the waitress quoted the owner as saying " that's just how it tastes." He asked twice to see the owner who didn't come to his table for quite some time. In the mean time for us, an order of yellow rice came out white rice and the red beans were black beans. However shredded beef (ropa vieja) was delicious as were the salads and skirt steak quesadillas.
Finally, it took over a half hour to get our check and another waiter took care of our bill.
Overall, a very disappointing experience.
