Best little hotel in south Reno. Located in the middle of a business park about 15 minutes south of downtown, you can see the new hotel from Highway 395 which runs along the west side of the hotel. Although the freeway is only a hundred yards from the hotel, double-paned windows shield hotel guests from any noise. A new shopping mall on the other side of the freeway offers a slew of traditional stores and eateries, and there's a small cafe and a Mexican restaurant down the block.
The rooms are of traditional Hampton Inn design - a dark wood console contains a 23" television (not a flat screen) featuring over 20 options, including HBO, the Weather Channel, FoxNews, and three sports channels. The console also contains a microwave and minifridge, and the housekeeping staff might leave you a package of microwavable popcorn if you ask nicely.
The bathroom has an open wood vanity and the shower features a bump-out bar so that the shower curtain doesn't wrap itself around you while you're scrubbing your back. The hotel is very conservation conscious (in water-scare Reno, you can't afford not to be) so they'll leave your towels hanging on the rack unless you leave them in the tub or on the floor. The bathroom also has a ventilation fan, but the air in Reno is so dry that any residual humidity from the shower is quickly absorbed into the room if you leave the bathroom door open in a few minutes.
There's a complimentary breakfast bar that's open from 6 -10 am, with a hot entree du jour. They'll also provide a to-go bag for guests who are in a rush. Complimentary coffees and juices are available the rest of the day, and there's a small snackbar adjacent to the front desk where you can buy sodas, candy, ice cream, and various sundries. (And if you forgot your toothbrush or toothpaste, they won't charge you for the replacement!).
A small business center is located to the right of the front desk with two computer workstations offering complimentary internet access, a DVD player, and dual USB ports. A fax/scanner is connected to the workstations, charging $1.00 per page (compared to the cost of business centers at Hilton-name hotels, I found the Hampton Inn's costs very reasonable). For those with laptops, complimentary high-speed DSL and wireless is available from your room.
Staff is friendly and efficient, although they seem to have only staffer per shift, which may slow things down if multiple parties are trying to check in and/or out at the same time the telephone is ringing. There's also a small indoor pool that's open from 9 am until 10 pm, with complimentary towels.
One drawback is front doors that do not close tightly - a simple turn of the deadbolt solved that problem, but I always like to hear the secure "click" of the door latch to know that it's fully closed.
All in all, it's one of the better and more affordable places to stay in Reno, if you don't mind getting back in your car to get anywhere.
