First, I'd like to say that I stayed at the Orleans for NYE 2006. The first night I arrived, I discovered that the bed was very hard and woke up with a sore back and neck. Upon reporting the problem to reception, they immediately apologized, moved me to a "soft" room which had a very comfortable bed, and my troubles were over.
I booked another stay at the Orleans through a package deal with USAirways the last weekend of January 2008. Prior to confirming my reservation, I called the Coast Casinos reservation line to ask about the bed situation. The representative informed me that every bed in the Orleans Casino had recently been changed out and replaced with very comfortable pillow top mattresses, so I should have no problem.
Upon arrival, I checked the bed first thing and couldn't believe that the mattress was very hard again! I called reception, but this time there's "nothing they can do" since the Casino is under new management (Boyd Gaming) and all the beds are now the same in each room. I called USAirways to try and upgrade to a different hotel, but there was "nothing they could do" about it.
After tossing and turning most of the night and waking with a very stiff back, on Saturday around 7 a.m. I kept hearing this slamming and rattling sound every 5-10 minutes. Another hour of this, and I was convinced that my room was next to some hallway door that was constantly opening and closing, but when I looked out into the hallway, there were just a number of other rooms. Apparently, all of the doors slam shut and rattle back and forth a few times before closing completely.
Exhausted after my first night in Vegas, I called Orleans reception again. "Nothing they can do." I called USAirways again and they escalated the situation to a supervisor, who informed me there was "nothing they can do." I went down to the business center, looked up available hotels and booked my second night at the Paris Casino. Before doing that, I called Paris and Housekeeping told me that they could put a "cell foam pad" on any bed that felt too hard. I took them up on it, and it worked perfectly the second night.
Unfortunately, I had to forfeit my second night at the Orleans since there was "nothing anyone could do." If you're accustomed to "pillow top" mattresses and need a softer bed in a quiet room to sleep well, this Casino will likely leave you very disappointed. The hotels on the Strip are more expensive, but I will always stay at one with better service that can accommodate my needs next time.
Lastly, I'm attaching a picture of the "pillow top" mattress that I was assured I would be sleeping on before booking my reservation. Honestly, there should be a law against this!
