“Timeshare was not what we had in mind”

Westgate Flamingo Bay at Las Vegas

Jun 10, 2008

Last year's flirtation with the idea of owning a timeshare at PH Towers led to a 3-night stay at Westgate's only existing timeshare, Flamingo Bay. This stay would "sell us" on the wonderful world of timeshares. It didn't, for a number of reasons.
First, we checked in early on Friday (2:30, not 4) and was told to come back later, because it was too busy to "pre-register" us. We had a rental car, so this was only an inconvenience, not a problem. Returning at 4:30 we were given a packet of papers to take to the "concierge desk." Here is where they opened the packet, showed us a map, and circled the building where we would be staying, as well as where we should park. They also said we had to meet with Bridget - was 9 AM Sunday good? Uh, no. We are not morning people, and eventually were given an 11 AM appointment. For what? we asked, and they hemmed and hawed and said they'd go over it with us on Sunday.
We drove to our "parking area" where most of the spaces were cordoned off, parked, and lugged our carryons to the unit. The units are 4 to a building, 2 up and 2 down, with a security gate outside. Our security gate was propped open with a rock. We climbed the stairs - they never mentioned stairs, something my arthritic knees weren't happy about, and saw the no smoking sign on the door. OK, we're smokers, and weren't told the villas were all no smoking, but there were outside "common areas" where one could smoke.
Inside, the unit looked like a model for a very bland suburban condo, down to the plastic vases of plastic flowers on the tables. It seemed clean, and did have all the amenities promised - fridge, range, dishwasher, and washer and dryer; place settings for 4 and same basic pots and pyrex-type pans.
The light and ceiling fan switches were strangely located and took some experimenting to figure out- for example, the light and ceiling fan switches for the bedroom are located outside of the room, next to the front door, and one of them turns on the electric plugs at the head of the bed. Since the lamps and clock-radio weren't plugged in, this took a few minutes to figure out!
The noise level was a factor in our dissatisfaction. First, the neighbors were very loud, screaming and shouting starting at 7 AM. Next, a fist pounding on our door at 9 AM - it sounded like we were being raided! - turned out to be someone trying to find our neighbors. It seems the security gate was propped open again. We called security, who said there were wedding party guests in the other villas. So what? We still want our privacy and quiet!
And speaking of quiet, these units are designed so the air-conditioning units are in the kitchen ceiling- which is right next to the bedroom - and every time it goes on, it sounds like construction-sized trucks are starting up over your head. Not conducive to sleep.
Every time we went out, rocks were holding our security gate open. We removed them 8 times, and a second call to security was brushed off, evidently, as we heard nothing more.
Sunday at 11, we called the front desk to find out about our "appointment" and were told to go to the sales center, which is not labeled as such - it's the "owner's center." Bridget had never heard of us, but after a few minutes, gamely tried to sell us a timeshare. After hearing about the security and noise issues, a manager was brought over, who wrote down our concerns and tried to sell us again. We said no, by the way.
Upon returning to the unit, I read the informational binder, which said we'd be charged for housekeeping ($35/day for 4 days) unless we cleaned the unit, washed all the dishes, stripped the bed, etc. This was not mentioned at checkin, and an extra $140 charge for services not received would have been an unpleasant surprise when we got home.
We heard some grumbles by the pool about the shuttles (booked up and unavailable when wanted) but the other owners/visitors seemed happy. If we were looking for a loud neighborhood where we did all our own work, this would be a great place to stay. But we're not, and it wasn't.

“Quiet, good value”

Westgate Flamingo Bay at Las Vegas

Apr 4, 2008

My husband and I flew into Las Vegas with plans to hike and explore the nearby wilderness areas. Stayed for three nights at Westgate Flamingo---we hiked the Red Rock Wilderness area.
I'd recommend the property for people who want to be off the Strip--and away from the crowds and casinos.
Our condo was very nice---clean and roomy. The kitchen is full size and well stocked with dishes and cookware.
We never heard a sound from the other condos. The pool area is attractive, clean and has plenty of pool furniture.
There is a (free) common laundry room.
A (free) shuttle takes guests to the Strip and picks up at scheduled times.
The only downsides to the property are:
There are no towel bars/racks in the bathroom--no place to hang wet towels.
If you use the computer in the lobby, it's $5. for 20 minutes of Internet connection and they deduct two minutes for each page you print out.

“scorpions, scorpions....”

As a member of Interval International Timeshares, I rented one week in october at this hotel with friends.
The property is nice, secure and not so far from the "strip"
they have 2 bedrooms suites, with kitchen and laundry facilities located on small buildings (only 2 floors) and prices are OK.
the fact is on the second night, I wanted to do my laundry, and my laundry bag was under the sink in our master bedroom.
When I get some clothes one big scorpion jump at me, you can imagine my fear. ( and I'm allergic to every kind of bites even mosquitos), fortunately it didn't bite me and my husband killed it.
It was a big arizona bark kind of..and what they did.... nothing at all. the manager was not here, we asked (even begged ) for another room that we got very late (midnight). and when I wanted to make complain, the manager was never there.
When I came back to France, I send messages to the managers, and they said they will investigate but no answers..
I don't understand how they are with their customers, maybe if I threat them with lawyers I could have something at least excuses which I never get. but we are foreigners and they don't care. so as an advice, If you go there beware of scorpions...

Westgate Flamingo Bay at Las Vegas

Timeshare facility that rents online or throught exchange. Ours was rented through exchange program with husbands company for business trip.
Cleaniness seems to be an issue. Countertops in kitchen and bathroom, sticky and dirty. Dining room table same. Capet left dirt on bottoms of socks, wiped up water off bathroom floor, towel came up very, very dirty.
Condo was spacious for a 4 people who get along or a family.
Wash machine was handy, but make quite a racket.
Kitchen come with the very basics, nothing else.
Housekeeping is not provided unless you've stayed 7 days or more, otherwise its 35.00. You are asked to wash towels and strip your beds when you leave.

One nite young couple next door, woke us at 3am having a knockdown, screaming fight, it took 3 calls to security and a threat to call the police to get any results. Finally, after 2 hours, couple was ask to leave property.

A shuttle is provided to and from the Vegas strip and seemed to be used by others, parking is good except for days when the facility holds some type of meeting and then you're lucky to find a spot close to your room if you're near the front.

Would I stay here again, only if someone else was paying.
I know the rate of exchange for the company for 6 days here was
over 300.00 a day. Someone got ripped here.
I found the same place online advertising for 69,00

But last and far from least, on two different days, employees entered our rooms without knocking, one of our roommates happend to be setting on the couch the first day, a man opened the door, came in saw him and ran out. Second time, maid had entered room, opened bedroom door and roommate was lying on bed reading a book. When confronted with this, only explaination was, "Sometimes the help gets the room numbers wrong". Just wasn't comfortable for us to know staff could just come and go whenever they wanted

RHODE ISLAND

We stayed in a one bedroom unit Thanksgiving week. We had a unit facing the pool and waterfall. It was quiet. We never heard another guest in any units. The place was immaculate. All the appliances and furnishings were in like new condition. I loved the gas fireplace to take the chill out upon returning to our unit. I honestly can't think of one complaint. The staff was very helpful and courteous. If you do have any problem no matter how small they jump and take care of it immediately. They also have a card in the room stating that this is their policy. The pictures do not do this place justice. It is even nicer in person. We felt so comfortable here. It was only a short drive from the strip, just down the road from the Rio, Palms and Gold Coast. We had a rental car so going back and forth was no problem at all. They also have all type of onsite activities, but we didn't take advantage of any as we had so much ground to cover on the strip. Great place!
