Stayed at GVR from June 14-19, 2008 for a conference. Found out about the free airport shuttle prior to leaving by calling the hotel. The person I spoke with was very informative, and we (there were 5 of us) had no problems finding the shuttle pick up area.
This was a large conference, so there were about 40 people waiting for the shuttle at the same time, in the 100+ degree heat. When the "bus" arrived, we were kind of shocked to see that it only seated 16 people! As there were people in line in front of us, we weren't able to get on the bus. We assumed the driver would take the people to the hotel, then come back and get more of us. Not the case. The shuttle operates on a schedule, and the driver was quick to tell us, he could not "deviate from the schedule". This meant we had to wait nearly an hour, in the heat (brutal for us Michiganders), for the next "scheduled" run. Some people ended up renting a limo or taking a taxi rather than wait.
Once at the hotel, all but one of us had to wait for our room to be prepared. Mind you, this was around 1:00pm, so I wasn't terribly surprised that there weren't adequate rooms available.
Finding your room at first is a real challenge. We all took our bags to the one person's room who got a room, and got horribly lost. Also--a lot of hallways leading to rooms require a room key.
There are two "towers": East and West. The East tower is newer, and it definitely shows. The waitress at the Feast buffet asked where I was staying, and when I said the West tower she replied: "oh that's too bad--the West is really dirty". I called the desk to ask about this, and was assured that the rooms in both towers were identical. Identical in looks--yes, sort of. But you can really tell in the carpet, wallpaper and other minor items (newer TVs and furniture in the East) which was remodeled and which wasn't. The beds and bedding, however, are the same.
My room was located at the end of a hall (#4054) and I had a "view" of part of a parking ramp and a vacant lot across the street. It had a Bose radio/cd player on the bedside table which I found to be an excellent amenity!
My bathroom was huge, with a huge tub separate from a roomy shower stall. The toilet is in a little room with a door, and it has a phone. There was some graffitti written on the bathroom wall in what appeared to be permanent marker. Looks as though they tried to wash it off, but it seems they would have just re-wallpapered over it. The bathroom outlet was awkwardly placed rather close to a glass shelf, making it somewhat difficult to plug in my flat iron. Plenty of wall shelves in the bathroom for all your toiletries. Be aware that the blow dryer is in a bag under your sink. GIANT fluffy towels galore!
The bed and pillows were super comfy and the bedding nice and soft. There is ample closet and drawer space for your clothes. I didn't use the honor bar as the prices were super outrageous, but it seemed to be very well stocked. I found the fridge--but never could get it open (it had a lock on it). From what I understand, there wasn't much room in it anyway.
Don't look for the door hanger "do not disturb/housekeeping" sign. It's a button near your door.
I only utilized housekeeping every-other day during my stay, and the housekeepers are great about granting your wishes. They even called and left voice mail on the non-cleaning days saying if you need the room cleaned, to contact them. Also--they do provide turn-down service, if desired, with free bottled water.
The pool area is gorgeous, as are the rest of the grounds. Several pools to choose from; one even has a sandy beach (which I noticed kids were really enjoying!). The lounge chairs are PLUSH complete with pillows. There are also lounge beds and cabanas. Misters in the trees are constantly running, although while we were there it was never below 100 degrees with less than 10% humidity--so the misters really only gave the "illusion" of moisture. Full bar service with attentive waitstaff was awesome. If you're getting too much sun, a lifeguard or waitstaff will bring you an umbrella. Upon arrival, you an get your own GIANT towel, or staff will get it for you and spread it on your lounger. From what I heard, "The Pond" pool area is topless, although I didn't check it out first hand.
Dined in the Feast the day we arrived and found it to be above-average buffet food. The food court is a great economical alternative and ate at Panda Express one day for lunch. We had a group dinner at Hank's one evening, and they accomodated our group in a private dining area. The food and service was by far the best I've ever experienced. The only bad point was upon paying the tab for 15 (huge bill), it was found that someone from the main restaurant had charged 2 bottles of wine @ $150 to our bill. This error was resolved quickly and couteously, however.
The casino is huge, with games for everyone. The slots are fun and relatively loose from my other Vegas experiences. There's also a movie theater in the hotel and The District (shopping and restaurants) right across the street.
All in all--it was a very good stay. I'd definitely stay here again.
