Stayed at the Westin Crown Center for 5 days while attending a convention in town. Having never stayed at a Westin before, my friend and I were looking forward to their heavenly beds. The beds did not disappoint! The comforter was thick as was the mattress and mattress topper and we each sunk into bed propped by 5 pillows each. It was heavenly.
The rest of the hotel was ok to just above average. Lobby was impressive and check-in couldn't be simpler. However, in retrospect, we felt that the staff didn't willingly supply information unless we specifically asked for it. For example, we inquired about internet access from the rooms and was told that there was a $9.99 fee for a 24hr access. It took us 2 days to find out that there was free WiFi in the hotel lobby! Likewise, when we asked about our options on the best way to get to the Convention Center, we were faced with blank looks on the staffs' faces. We asked about public buses and was told it was not highly recommended, especially with the 100+degree weather outside. Then, we asked if cabs were the best way and they agreed. Again, on day 2, we find out there is a COMPLIMENTARY hotel shuttle to the convention center!
Another strange thing was that we got a copy of USA Today every morning with a note that if we weren't interested, to return the paper to the front desk for a 75-cent refund. It was a little annoying to make that daily trip to the front desk to return the paper, even though we told them every morning to cancel it.
The interior of the hotel past the lobby was just ok. You could tell it was a bit aged... there is an impressive indoor waterfall, but again, you could tell it was just a little past it's original grandeur. Still, plenty of guests were seen taking pictures by it.
Our rooms were spacious with a very nice view of downtown. However, the interior was a bit aged as well. The bathroom had new vanity and countertop, but the bathtub and walls were a little old. The tv was old and had satellite dish cable (never saw that at a hotel before)... reception was terrible, especially each time it rained.
Since the hotel was attached to the Crown Center Mall, we ate grabbed our breakfast there each morning without any problems, frequenting Einstein Bros Bagels and another local bakery shop. It was much more economical and very convenient. We had several other meals in the mall... the Japanese restaurant was surprisingly good and fresh (we're from NYC). We did make the trek out to Arthur Bryants for BBQ (legendary and premiere KC BBQ joint) as well as Jack Stack's... both were excellent and highly recommended!
Lastly, we did take advantage of the hotel's pool. It was outdoors on the 5th floor deck and free (health center cost $5)... while not pretty or large by any means, it did get busy when the weekend approached and we were able to order drinks.
Pros: The Heavenly Bed, outdoor pool, next to mall, free WiFi in lobby
Cons: no airport shuttle, staff wasn't all that helpful, felt like Westin tried charging for every little thing.
