I absolutely loved this museum. I am a huge Rockwell Fan and I must say seeing his work in person you see how truly talented Mr. Rockwell really was. It is unbelievable the detail he put into every piece of work. My boyfriend and I made it a day trip driving from Long Island NY, it took about 3 hours to get there and believe the contents of the museum made it worth it. Norman Rockwell was one of my favorites, but now is my number 1. The only thing that annoyed me about the museum was the staff. My boyfriend and I are young (in our 20's) and I feel like they thought we did not belong because of that. There were older people there actually touching the paintings and getting extremely close, my boyfriend and I know better and kept our distance. However there was this one lady on staff that came up to us more then twice telling us they are originals Do not touch. Well obviously they are and we have more intelligence to know not to touch the paintings. It annoyed us and it felt like she was following us. I finally got fed up and turned to her and said can I help you in a very polite way. I felt like she was hovering. She finally walked away wihout a word. My boyfriend and I continued to watch older people touching paintings getting right up to them and not a word mentioned to them. The experience was amazing, but that lady did take a way from it all. I've been to The Met, The Whitney, the Guggenheim, and never had that happen to me or anyone I know for that matter, I was so insulted by this and am glad to see other people thought the staff were grumpy as well. Due to the staff I have to give it 4 stars instead of 5.
Tucked away off a quiet road in Stockbridge, MA, is this museum that houses a majority of the work of Norman Rockwell. The land the museum sits on has some of the best views and is one of the nicest spots out here in this quaint New England spot. The place looks just like any museum, respectable and orderly. It has two floors and rotating exhibits. It has more work from this great artist than I have ever seen anywhere. There are room after room of paintings and some large and some small. The downstairs part has a movie playing and Saturday Evening Post covers from all the years Norman Rockwell did them. I enjoyed the visit and the gift shop was quite large. It is an attraction you must visit well out here in the Berkshires. Since this was his home, most of the work is recognizable of the sites around the area. The staff here was very nice and cordial. I highly recommend this place!
The art part of this museum is great; the staff is terrible! They appeared to be grumpy old people with nothing better to do. They were reluctant to answer questions and never cracked a smile. In all fairness, we visited this museum quite a few years ago 1999, so the staff may have changed. The staff's attitudes really spoiled our experience, so we would not visit again.
What a great piece of history and not bad for a leisurely day of scenic viewing.
I have very specific tastes in art but something about Norman Rockwell and his work.
The museum is located in a very nice New England setting and perfect for a day getaway and a little relaxation. Nothing is rushed here and you can walk the grounds or peruse the museum. Located near the Lee outlets and downtown Lee MA. There are some excellent restaurants downtown and all very conveniently located near the Mass Turnpike. You can also visit West Stockbridge located just down the road as well. It is an excellent small art community with some nice restaurants as well. All in all the NRM is a great play for a day’s getaway.
