We had the pleasure of staying at Blantyre in May 2004 spending the weekend here for an early spring getaway.
Blantyre is one of the last built mansions in the Berkshires (circa 1900) and although in its history it was almost abandoned it is now one of the Berkshire's finest hotel properties.
Approaching Blantyre we drove up their private road which was meticulously manicured with small white stones. As you wander up the driveway the large Tudor style mansion appears atop a small hill in the centre of their well groomed grounds.
We were greeted at the door by Blantyre's General Manager Katja Henke and one of her capable staff. Entering the residence's grand hall was like taking a step back in time. Once completing registration formalities we were escorted to our room. Our suite was located in the main building and had a nice view overlooking the lawns in back of the mansion. Although it was too early in the year for guests to be enjoying activities out on the lawn the local wildlife was abundant including a local flock of turkeys who wandered through early one morning.
Our accommodations were perfect! Immediately inside our room was a sofa and a few chairs with a coffee table containing fruit, sweets and some drinks. The bed was situated in an area with windows jutting out on three sides. As our pictures show this was a pleasant environ to wake up in. In a separate room there was a well appointed bathroom complete with sitting area. The bath amenities were plentiful.
In addition to the mansion there are a number of other buildings on the property as well - including a carriage house that houses Blantyre's exercise equipment. All around the property we found extras ... including drinks waiting in the tennis courts to the Dove bars in the carriage house's fridge.
Although Blantyre is situated within close driving distance to Berkshire attractions like Chesterwood, the Rockwell Museum, Tanglewood, etc. we found plenty of room and space to kick back on the property itself. There is even a path around the property that we spent an hour or two walking about in the crisp springtime air.
One of the best kept secrets of Blantyre is its restaurant and it is here that we enjoyed one of the best meals, both in quality and presentation, that we've had in years. We started in the great hall on the sofa next to the fire with some drinks and hors d'oeuvres. The subdued lighting and quaint atmosphere was a great preparation for the main course.
The dining room was exquisite with each setting complimented by matching flowers. The food was equally exquisite and impeccably prepared. And unlike a typical American restaurant - here the food portions were just right. Equally as impressive is Blantyre's extensive wine list.
After dinner we retired back to the grand hall for some after dinner drinks and chocolates; a perfect finish. There's not too many places where we have enjoyed a 3+ hour dinner engagement - at Blantyre we were totally out of touch with time.
Blantyre's breakfast was served in a room off the main dining area; glass all around and a beautiful morning's view around the grounds. Our cooked to order meal was accompanied by a fine selection of classical music. After breakfast one could also enjoy a romantic carriage ride right from Blantyre's entranceway. Nice to get to experience what it may have been like back in the early days of this mansion!
All in all, with 30+ years of extensive travel, Blantyre easily makes it onto our 10 list. Since our stay we understand they have undergone numerous improvements and renovations as well - and is now open year-round. With the location and amenities there is a price to pay as you'd expect from any hotel who's earned the right to be a Relais & Châteaux member. Even if you can't afford to stay here - you may want to still consider a dinner reservation ... its well worth it. We'll be back!
