“Not too great but not the worst we've stayed in”

Econo Lodge South Portland

2 of 5 stars
Massachusetts

We needed a room for one night so it didn't have to be a five star hotel or anything. I'm somewhat disappointed. The non-smoking room we were in still smelled like stale smoke. There wasn't a shower curtain in the bathroom but when we pointed it out to the desk clerk, she was very apologetic and it was installed immediately. The staff is fine--friendly and helpful. And the free wi-fi is always a nice perk. The place was quiet. The continental breakfast was adequate but nothing special. Basically, a typical 'budget priced' chain hotel and a bit pricey, at that. I think I'd try to find something a bit nicer next time.

“Excellent Value”

my wife and i stayed here for one night. the room was clean and in good condition. the location is terrific as it is close to Portland and the Maine Mall. lots of good places to shop and eat nearby. also, Cape Elizabeth and the Lobster Shack at Two Lights is just down the road. in my experience Portland is fairly expensive so this motel is a good find . . . we will return when we are back in Portland.

“Not the Ritz, but fine for a night or two.”

Econo Lodge South Portland

3 of 5 stars
Durham, United Kingdom
Jun 20, 2008

I guess that it's pretty obvious that Maine on a weekend in mid-June is going to get booked up, and so the case proved to be. Unlike some other nearby hotels Econolodge was able to accommodate me, honouring my discount coupon. The room given to me stank of a mixture of previous pets and stale curry. I asked to be moved, but there was apparently no other available room. A staff member came and sprayed something around the room which I presume was some kind of deodorant, although it made little difference. She also found an empty beer bottle by the bed, which was nice. The room was OK, the bathroom was clean, so I prepared to grit my teeth and get used to the smell. I was pleasantly surprised, then, to get a knock at my door five mins later with the same staff member enquring as to how it was. She'd located another room if I wanted it. I checked it out. No smell. Clean. I moved in. Good.

The hotel isn't going to win prizes for luxury, and it is very 1980s, complete with those pink flowery paintings in the rooms that 25 years ago were the height of psedo-sophistication. But the hotel is clean, not unappealing to look at, and equipped perfectly well. It's fine for a night or two, it's good value and the staff, as I have discovered, is attentive and obliging.

    • Liked — Cheap and fine for a night or two
    • Disliked — That some of the rooms smell bad

“Staff needs some people skills”

Econo Lodge South Portland

I have already written a review and nobody even answered me.
Four of us girls stayed and we did not have a nice stay. Our toilet overflowed and we were told that we could not us there bathroom. We said we wanted another room and were told they had none. Toilet was fisxed, the next night it overflowed again. Went to lobby told them we wanted another room, said they had none. We knoew that they did because we had just called to check. They finally gave us another room, so at 10:00 at night we are moving our room. We were also given cleaner and had to clean up the bathroom after it overflowed. I was also told that we owed them another $40.00, when I asked why I was told it was because we had four people in the room. I told her that there was noplace on the web site to put in how many people. She told me we were supposed to tell whenwe got there and pay the difference!!! When we got ther we asked for more towels because there was 4 of us and nobody said anything then. So if you do stay there stay away from room 106!!! The staff should take people skill classes. I could go on and let you know all of what happened but I quess I will stop there.

“Convenient and Nice”

Econo Lodge South Portland

Dec 26, 2007

I have stayed in this hotel a few times recently. I have also stayed here a few years back. They have given this hotel a face lift and it is a nice play to stay. It is so convenient, right out behind the mall and so close to everything. Just recently, when I stayed there in November...I put my back out (not at the hotel) and they were very concerned and made sure I had ibuprofen and I spoke with the front desk on the phone for something and they made it a point to ask how my back was doing and if there was anything they could do for me. I am going back this weekend to Portland, and guess where I am staying? I, for one, love this hotel. I like that the room we had last time had a microwave and a fridge already in it and we didn't have to pay extra for it. We are ones to sleep in late, so housekeeping can't do their thing cause we're in bed still...but they have no problem with giving us towels, etc., when we ask for them later on in the day. I feel very comfortable and at home here.
