I guess that it's pretty obvious that Maine on a weekend in mid-June is going to get booked up, and so the case proved to be. Unlike some other nearby hotels Econolodge was able to accommodate me, honouring my discount coupon. The room given to me stank of a mixture of previous pets and stale curry. I asked to be moved, but there was apparently no other available room. A staff member came and sprayed something around the room which I presume was some kind of deodorant, although it made little difference. She also found an empty beer bottle by the bed, which was nice. The room was OK, the bathroom was clean, so I prepared to grit my teeth and get used to the smell. I was pleasantly surprised, then, to get a knock at my door five mins later with the same staff member enquring as to how it was. She'd located another room if I wanted it. I checked it out. No smell. Clean. I moved in. Good.
The hotel isn't going to win prizes for luxury, and it is very 1980s, complete with those pink flowery paintings in the rooms that 25 years ago were the height of psedo-sophistication. But the hotel is clean, not unappealing to look at, and equipped perfectly well. It's fine for a night or two, it's good value and the staff, as I have discovered, is attentive and obliging.
