This was a great hotel. I was very surprised at how nice it was since we got the room for only $70/night and that was through entertainment.com. It was very clean and the staff was always nice. You also got warm cookies when you checked into the hotel so that was a plus! Universal Studios is right across the street but still not within walking distance since the actual entrance to the park itself is still a little drive. The only downside to this hotel is that you have to pay for parking and when you have to pay for parking at Universal as well that can be a big chunk of change each day. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and I'll definitely stay here again on my next trip to Universal.

“Don't be fooled - NOT more convenient to Universal”

We thought walking to the park would be most convenient for our visit to Universal Studios. We are fast walkers and don't mind walking. Turns out, it is quite a LONG walk, and the shuttle service is not good service. The bus route is shared with multiple other hotels in the area so the ride is a long one before getting to the park or back to the hotel, and the number of runs during the day is few. The hotel charges for parking, and the charge is just a bit under the parking charge for Universal. So, I recommend:
Check parking rates for Doubletree v. Universal
Ask about the bus schedule (It was VERY hard to get a straight answer or an accurate schedule)
I didn't check the walking distance - it's under a mile but you can check for sure
Stay at a nicer hotel for a better price elsewhere in orlando, with free parking, and pay to park at Universal Studios so you have just a short walk to your car after a long day at the park.
This hotel is nothing special and we ended up in the wrong tower when we first arrived because we couldn't understand the front desk clerk (spoke little english).

“Luxury, Comfort, Location, & free Cookies - Doubletree has it all.”

My first experience of The Doubletree was when I went in and asked them to call me a cab back to my own hotel!! This was at gone midnight, and I never forgot how professional and helpful the staff were, going above and beyond to help us, even though we were not even guests there.
So I leapt at the opportunity to stay there the following year. What can I say?
The cookie on check-in is a wonderful treat.
Rooms are just gorgeous, HUGE, clean, lovely crisp bedding, and such comfortable beds, really felt luxurious. Shower is nice and powerful, and always lots of hot water.
Lots of places to eat onsite and nearby - we tried the hotel deli, pizza hut, restaurant and starbucks, all were brilliant. Also try the Alehouse across the parking lot for great food and not too expensive.
Grounds are clean and beautifully maintained, always spotless.
Staff are very polite and helpful, and seem genuinely happy to work there, which is nice.
The hotel is also within very easy walking distance of Universal Studios, meaning you can get over there early before the crowds. It's a lovely walk as well. Saves a fortune on cabs.

In short, I have been to Florida 11 times in 7 years, and the Doubletree Hotel has been my favourite hotel experience of all 5 hotels I've stayed in. Going back there in Jan '09...Can't wait!!

“Great for going to Universal”

My family just returned from a wonderful trip to Florida, which included 3 days in Orlando at the Doubletree. We were cautious going in, as there were so many hotels to choose from in the area. What made our final decision was the distance of the hotel to Universal. You could walk to the park or take a $5 cab (including tip) each way. We got there the first day very early (around 10 am), but still had no problem checking in and leaving our car in the lot, which was very nice. No need to deal with all that after a tiring day at the parks. Our room was very nice, with 2 queen beds. The staff was great and very accomodating, and a big thumbs up to housekeeping, who answered our evening distress call when a pen exploded on the white bedding! They had a team of 3 people up there in less than 5 minutes, and completely stripped it away and replaced it without a fuss at all. We all loved the huge pool and spa tub, which were wonderfully relaxing. It was very nice to be able to enjoy it until 11 at night also. All in all, it was the perfect spot for us. Close to the parks, very clean (a MUST for me), very nice staff, a Cracker Barrell and Fridays next door. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

The only "negative" would have to be the vacationshare pitches they try to hook you into in the lobby. And yes, my husband fell for the pitch. But seeing as how we didn't have an extra $20K for a vacation to lay out, it was pretty easy to say no at the end of the 2 hours, collect our $100 and be on our way. But it is something to keep in mind. From what I hear, MANY of the hotels do this pitch in the area. Feel free to pass up the perks and move along.
