My wife, I and our 3 year old son stayed at Port Orleans French Quarter from April 12-19 and absolutely loved it. It was our 5th Disney property over the past 10 years we've stayed at, and now consider it to be the best.
Simple reason was size. Each and every resort we've been at has been all we could ask for, but the French Quarter is a smaller property and you don't get the crowds/hassles that the larger resorts simply can't avoid.
FOOD: just one restaurant, cafeteria type set up, nothing fancy (pasta, hamburgers, pizza, etc), but perfect for breakfast before hitting the parks.
GROUNDS: well manicured with scaled down walkways that look like roads. Each of the buildings (we were number 3 of I believe 6 in total) are less than a 2 minute walk from the restaurant, pool, boat lauch, bus stops. Unlike other resorts which can be 10-15 minute walks from room to restaurant, no worries at French Quarter if you need to run back for something.
ROOMS: does the job, 2 double beds (one king available as well), sitting area, 2 sinks and seperate bath. Came with iron, coffee maker, hairdryer, safe, minifridge. We rented cot for my son ($15/day). Nice if it was included, but better than getting a terrible nights sleep trying to share a double bed with a child.
POOL: fantastic pool, water slide and never overly crowded due to it's large size and less guests to use it.
TRANSPORTATION: Disney buses are the best, come every 5 minutes to any and all parks. Port Orleans Riverside is the French Quarter's sister resort and is quite large, sits next door. It has 5 seperate bus stops, the French Quarter has only one. Nice advantage is the bus stop at French Quarter first, so you always get onto an empty bus. By the time it makes it's rounds through Riverside, the bus is packed, people standing. And equally as nice, on the way back from the parks, French Quarter is the first stop.
Another nice touch is the water launch that runs to and from Downtown Disney. It's a quiet 10 minute lazy ride that our son loved. Bit cool at night, but much more relaxing than the bus.
SERVICE: smiles all around, check in not a problem.
While we have enjoyed each of the other resorts, the French Quarter will be our preferred Disney resort simply for the relaxed laid back and quiet atmosphere the others simply can't provide.
