My family and I recently stayed at this wonderful resort for 5 nights/6 days and we absolutely loved every aspect of the Coconut Cay! I have never met such nice people-everyone we encountered was friendly and helpful, from the front desk staff to the housekeepers and the groundskeepers. The staff bustles around the resort in golf carts and they always had a smile and a wave when they passed us. Where to begin....the grounds and buildings are gorgeous: the buildings are painted in bright colors: blue, pink, yellow, lime green (very Keys-like) and there are hurricane shutters covering the windows in the same shades. There are lush tropical plants and palm trees with coconuts throughout the property. My daughter loved to search for fallen coconuts each morning. There is a lovely picnic area with brightly colored picnic tables, and charcoal grills, under the palms. We made a habit of eating breakfast and dinner outside-the scenery is absolutely beautiful. We normally stay at hotels with interior corridors and here the rooms open to the outside. I was thrilled to be able to open the door to our room and step outside into a tropical paradise.
We had a large kitchen/efficiency room, which was very clean, and we loved having the full size stove and refrigerator, along with a microwave. Not that we planned on cooking full meals, but it was nice to have the kitchen available if we wanted to cook something or reheat something. We did get a lot of carry out seafood from the Winn Dixie grocery store just down the road from the Coconut Cay. The Winn Dixie will steam your seafood for you in the store free of charge, so we were regulars at the seafood counter there-the Key West shrimp is delicious! We would bring our food back to the Coconut Cay and dine outside in the picnic area under the palm trees.
We enjoyed spending time at the Coconut Cay's pool, and we found the pool and pool deck to be uncrowded. Several times, there was no one else using the pool or pool deck and we had the entire pool area to ourselves. The pool deck is quite large with nice, comfortable lounge chairs. My favorite spot was right under one of the palm trees surrounding the pool. There is also a covered area with tables and chairs for those who want to be out of the sun.
You will need to drive to the beach (unless you have a boat), as the resort is on a canal which leads out to the bay, but there is no direct access to the beach. We had fun looking for the wild iguanas that sun themselves on the wall next to the canal.
We spent time at Bahia Honda State Park (just over the 7 Mile Bridge at MM 36.8) and Sombrero Beach (MM 50). A word of caution: I was severely stung by a Portuguese Man of War at Bahia Honda. The beach there is not patrolled by lifeguards so there is no flag system or warning system to alert you if Man of War are present in the water. We had to call 911 and I got an ambulance ride to Fisherman's Hospital ER, which is just down the road from the Coconut Cay. Sombrero Beach is not patrolled by lifeguards either, and we visited there and saw many Man of War washed up on the beach. Apparently, the out of town visitors (like me) don't know to watch for these things in the water. Both beaches are absolutely beautiful, so I'm not saying this to deter you from going there, but just caution you to be careful in the water. That being said, even the ER visit didn't keep me from having a wonderful time!
The Coconut Cay has guest laundry facilities on site ($2.00 per load-bring quarters!) and it made it very convenient for me to do a couple of loads of laundry during our stay.
The resort was very quiet. It was very peaceful sitting outside in the garden/picnic area under the palms rustling in the breeze. Yes, it's located next to the Marathon Airport (as several other reviews mentioned), but I saw very few planes take off or land during our stay. The ones I saw were small, commuter type planes. It's a small regional airport so there are no jumbo jets taking off or landing.
Coconut Cay/Marathon is located 50 miles north of Key West and we easily made 2 day trips to Key West during our stay. If you are driving to Key West and need a safe, inexpensive place to park your car for the day, I would recommend using the Key West Park and Ride Garage located at Caroline and Grinnell Streets near the Land's End Marina. The rate is $13/day or $2 per hour. You can even catch a free shuttle ride downtown from the garage, but we easily walked the distance to and from the downtown area-about 5 blocks to and from Duval Street.
We can't wait to return to the Coconut Cay! Couldn't have picked a better place to stay in the Keys!
