“Friendly - but food was fair.”

This is a nice place right next to the Pirate Soul Museum. My 10 yr old son picked it because of the pirate theme and the turkey leg entree. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere cool and clean - but none of us were happy with our food. It wasn't bad - it just wasn't great like every other place we went to in Key West. My kids turkey leg was fatty and overcooked, my fried softshell crab had little crab, my wife's tacos were too spicey for her taste, the Spicey Spagus appetizer was tastey but soggy. Like I said - the food was OK - nothing wrong with it so we sent nothing back - but there are so many restaurants in Key West with fantastic food - this just isn't one of them.

I did try the rum tasting - it was great - 2 snifters for $20.

“Loved This Pirate Tavern”

This place is just plain fun—a pirate tavern adjoining the Pirate Soul Museum. Great live music, tasty drinks, fabulous selection of rums. Friendly bartenders. Multiple widescreen TVs offer different sports events so, you can watch football while your friend watches hockey with no competing TV noise; all the TVs are on mute. Comfortable wooden bar chairs with backs make it easy to linger. We didn't order food but plates around us looked good.

We were on our annual trip to KW the first week of January looking for a good place to watch the LSU-Ohio State football game. We'd already been by some old favorites such as Turtle Kraals, B.O.'s Fishwagon and Schooner Wharf, all of which had good food, but none of which delighted us like Rum Barrel. One of the first signs of a good place is the house salad. At RB, the ingredients were the freshest around and were served generously. I had the fish tacos, which were the best I've had. Everything was fresh and cooked beautifully. Others I was with had the burgers, shrimp po boy, pulled pork sandwich and fish sandwich. Everyone was so satisfied that our only regret was that there was no room for desert. In fact, we liked the food so much that we went again later in the week.

With this kind of experience, I decided to check the place out in TA. It is surprising that Rum Barrel has not been frequently reviewed, and probably as a result, is not high on the list. I am writing this to correct the record. KW is full of great places to eat, but I say that, for informal fare, Rum Barrel is right in there with the best of them.

Really nice bar and restaurant between Mallory Square and the harbor. They have a nice selection of food and cater to most everyones tastes. If you go, check out Pirate Soul next door and take the tour. Very cool place.

We were browsing reviews for future meals when we saw the Rum Barrel ranking #89. This can only be for lack of reviews, so we're adding ours. After walking many blocks and reading menus, we settled on Rum Barrel for lunch today. The food was excellent. We ordered the Cajun Shrimp Po' Boy, the Portobello Mushroom Sandwich, and two side salads - one Caesar and one House. Preparation and portions were terrific, service was friendly and attentive. We didn't have room for the Cinnamon Bun Bread Pudding dessert, so we may go back. Try it - the menu is so varied, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed.
