If you're looking for a tranquil, relaxing place that's near Duval St and the Bight, the Island City House is great. This was a beautiful bed & breakfast style property.
My wife and I stayed for 5 nights in the Cigar House. We had a 3rd floor room with hardwood floors throughout and a private balcony facing the pool. It had a nice bedroom w/ a queen size bed, small dresser and flat panel tv. The living room/kitchenette had a sofa bed, reading chair, full size fridge/stove, and another flat panel tv. This room also had newer cabinets and granite countertops. Very cozy and comfortable.
The grounds were very lush and well kept. They offer a free continental breakfast in the courtyard each morning (bagels, muffins, fruit, yogurt, coffee, etc) which was fine. The pool was small and clean. Perfect for lounging around with a good book and then taking a brief dip when the sun overheats.
The front desk staff was EXTREMELY helpful and accomodating. They had a pre-printed sheet of restaurant and bar information with some great suggestions. We weren't disappointed with any of our choices.
The property was about 3 blocks from Duval and 2 blocks from the Bight. When we turned off Duval to head back each night, it was like we were walking through a quiet residential neighborhood.
Parking was very scarce (even for unloading the car to check in/out). You don't need a car on the island at all, in my opinion, so if you drive down from Miami or elsewhere, definitely get a one-way rental each way and save the money for nightlife on Duval St.
