I stayed at this hostel and as for a hostel it is just fine. For a cheap place to stay in Key West - $34 a night in the dorm room, I wasn't really expecting much. The courtyard area was nice, people gathered under the tiki hut and conversed before going out at night. Yes, there is no alcohol allowed, but we managed to enjoy enough on Duval Street. As for the other people staying, there were only foriegn travelers and backpackers in the dorm rooms. The private rooms there were a few people who seemed not to fit into the hostel atmosphere - they were expecting higher class. But the rest of us, were perfectly happy with the dorms. Its not the best hostel I have stayed at, but it is far from the worse! The rooms were cleaned everyday. The bunk beds a little old, but it was just a bed to sleep in. The kitchen area was outside in a covered area with a gas grill, which we prepared our dinners. The office staff was very friendly, especially the lady who had the dog. She was very happiful with helping with directions. The courtyard offers the atmosphere, it was a great place for us to sit and get to know each other and enjoy meals. There is a washer and dryer for guests to use, which was good to get my dirty clothes clean. The hostel is located in a great area, close to a beach and Duval Street. Was able to walk to just about everything.

I would stay here again if I am in Key West again. I would recommend it to anyone who has stayed at a hostel before, you will like it. But if you are not the hostel traveler, stay at the Holiday Inn.

“there are better options in Key West”

My husband and I booked one of the private rooms and didn't end up staying because the air conditioning didn't work and there were huge rats outside the door. The lady working at the front desk was very nice and helpful. The guy was rude and tried to accuse US of breaking the air conditioner! We found a very nice room with cold air-conditioning right on Duval St for only $10 more a night. If you are desperate, or are young backpackers looking for a bunk, this place may be Ok for you, but do not expect much.

“Staff Were So Rude, Giv It A Miss!!!”

Key West Youth Hostel & Seashell Motel

My boyfriend & I tried 2 book into here for 4 nights & it was impossible. Do not make a reservation via email as they don't respond. Do not make a reservation via phone as they 'can't'. When they asked whether we'd made a reservation, we informed them we had tried 2 but the stupid guy working there couldn't hav cared less. He only had a room for 1 night, despite being told 2 just 'turn up', & paying far too much money for the dumphole it is.

It is worth a miss for sure, the staff were so incompetent & the hostel is very run down.

My boyfriend and I stayed in this hostel in Key West for two nights. The room had three bunk beds and a tiny but clean bathroom. We received clean sheets at the check in. The matresses are covered with plastic and are a bit hard to sleep on but on the whole I will definitely recommend it to young people and couples.
The hostel price is a bit high but is still a good one in Key West. The location is the best thing of this Hostel and Motel. We were just at a a short stroll from the central Duval Street and the Southernmost point. If we will go back to Key West I will choose again the Seashell Motel and Hostel but this time I will try the motel rooms that looked very pretty.

“Best value on Key West”

Key West Youth Hostel & Seashell Motel

I wasn't expecting much from this hostel/hotel - just looking for a cheap place to stay on overpriced Key West. The private rooms at this hostel are run as a motel, though I wasn't sure what this meant exactly before I arrived.

I was pleased to find a clean room, with a large refrigerator, a TV, and AC. The bathroom was clean and in decent shape. Towels and bed linens provided. The place was certainly old, but that is part of its charm. It was clean and that's what mattered to me. They didn't have a king bed, but my boyfriend and I actually enjoyed each having our own full sized bed for a couple of nights!

A great feature of this place is FREE parking on site. A lot of hotels on Key West will charge you $25. Also, it is walking distance to the "party scene" on Duval St., but far enough away to not be bothered by it. There is also a public beach within walking distance (ask at the front desk how to get there - some of the beaches shown on the map are privately owned by fancy hotels).

Be warned though - there is no alcohol allowed on the premises. Given some of the past reviews of this place, I can see why. It had to clean up its act somehow I guess. We had no problem quietly drinking a beer in our room, but were careful to hide it when we left for the day!
