We too were a little apprehensive after all of the harsh reviews. However, we had such a great time we plan on staying at the Reach Resort again when we return to Key West with friends next Spring.
This was my second trip to Key West, but my husband's first. My first time I stayed at the Double Tree Grand Key Resort. It was a beautiful hotel, but out of the way and it had no beach access. The Reach Resort is within walking distance of Duval Street and all of the Old Town attractions. It also has a beautiful beach on the premises. The pool was nice and was manned by Ricardo on most of the days we went. Ricardo was a fabulous host and we couldn't say enough good things about him.
The beach was nice and due to the smaller size of the hotel, not too crowded. Part of it is taken up by a company that rents out jet skis, etc. We actually rented one on our last day and had a good time. They were not too loud or distracting to the beach goers as they can only be revved up past the swimming area which is quite large.
The room was nice and had a great balcony. The maids did a great job and were friendly. One complaint is that the "do not disturb" fall off the door handles if it is windy in the semi-open hallways.
The front desk staff didn't do the best job of providing information unless we asked for it. But they were very helpful otherwise.
One other complaint is that there is not room service yet though there are plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance.
