We had just come off of a 7-day Caribbean cruise and could not get a room at our usual B&B, so we took a chance on the Doubletree. Although we usually like to stay in Old Town, this was the only resort available with rates that were reasonable (at least for Key West!).
Upon arrival, the front porch that runs the length of the lobby was a very nice welcoming, lined with rocking chairs and lush foilage. Check in was a breeze, and up we went to our room, which was a King. The room was very nice, done up in a "Key West" color scheme (yellows, blues, and white), and the bathroom was a very nice size. There was also a small couch and table for relaxing, and our room overlooked some of the new condos on the Atlantic side.
The pool was located outside of the lobby, down a wide flight of stairs. It was very large, very nice, and there were plenty of lounge chairs available for the guests. There were also some cabanas at the far end of the pool for those who like a little break from the sun. At the top of the stairs is a very nice and well-stocked pool bar, and there are waiters and waitresses walking around should you need a drink while you are at the pool.
The Doubletree also offers shuttle service to town, as parking there is at a premium, and if you do happen to find a lot with an empty spot, they charge you out of the ying yang to park there. One bad thing about the shuttles is that everyone is waiting around for it, and despite who was there first, people push and shove their way on board. The good thing is that they have a back-up shuttle if there are far too many people. They will drop you at Smather's Beach or at the Conch Republic (near Mallory Square), but the other down-side is that the last shuttle runs around 11:00 p.m., so if you want to stay in town longer, you will need to take a cab back. The shuttle is free, except for the driver's tip.
We did not eat lunch or dinner there, but we did eat breakfast out on the veranda that overlooks the pool, and the food was quite good, with excellent service and moderate prices.
All in all, the Doubletree is a very nice, modestly priced resort. We would definitely stay there again if we were not able to get a room at our favorite B&B.
