I am so sorry that I didn't pay attention to the reviewer that wrote the review titled "Avoid this hotel". My wife and I flew to Orlando, and drove to Key West to enjoy the view, and for some heat. The hotel is quite easy to find. The first building you encounter coming onto the main island after coming off of highway 1 is Holiday Inn Key West.
Finding the hotel is about all of the "good" I care to pass on. The outside appearance of the hotel is marginal. It is reminiscent of an older road side hotel from the 60's or 70's. After checking in and going up to our assigned room (3rd floor), tells quite a bit of the story. The elevator appearance is trashy, the floor is trashy, and the operation is marginal and I'm suprised an elevator inspector would pass it for personel usage. The hallways are dimly lit, or not lit at all. Their appearance is something you might expect in an old warehouse.
Entering our room from the outside on the 3rd floor was our biggest disappointment. We felt that if the room was okay, we would simply stay in our room and not worry about the outside appearance. It wasn't okay. The sofa, the chair and bed appear clean. The bathroom floor is not clean (read as filthy); the bath tub is dirty, and the toilet seat is loose with several inches of play back and forth. The sink countertop appears quartz or quartz appearing, and it is clean. The room carpet is reasonable. The bed is comfortable and bedding appears clean.
After returning to the front desk to discuss the condition of the room we were assigned, I was given an option of checking another room out over the pool area. The first step inside the optional room told me that this "non-smoking room" had been smoked in, so elected to pass on the optional room.
The resturant at this Holiday Inn threw us for a loop. When we first walked by the resturant going to our room, we felt it strange that no one was in the resturant. When we went back to check to see if a meal was available, the bartender from the bar next to the resturant indicated that they were not operating the resturant that evening (Saturday evening), but we could eat in the bar. The menu consisted of several salads, several burgers, no soup was available; just not what you would expect from Holiday Inn. There were 8 to 10 small groups or families in the bar eating. The food was average, but nothing you would cross the street for.
This hotel is a big enough disappointment, we are cutting our Key West visit short, from 3 days to 1 day. If I wanted a $20 hotel room, I would have called Tom Bodett and Motel 6. Matter of factly, I would have much preferred to be staying in the Motel 6 than in this Holiday Inn. The sad difficulty here, is that this room is $258.99 plus tax per night.
I feel that I have been dealt an injustice through misrepresentation of this hotel through it's internet site, but I felt that with good reviews were running 3 good, to 1 bad review and thought it would be a reasonable risk and experience, given it is a Holiday Inn. I'm guessing that the executives of Holiday Inn have never spend a night in this hotel. And if they wish a recommendation for Key West lodging; I recommend they get a room at the Meriott or a B&B here in town. Where is Tom Bodett when you need him. This is not a good experience.
Referencing the service at the front deck, generally, it was acceptable, although 1 of the 3 people that helped us was much less than courteous, to the point of being defensive.
Sign me; sadly disappointed with Holiday Inn.
