Eh, it was okay. Given all the great reviews maybe my expectations were set a little high. I had a nice room in the front off the main street, right by the pool. The room was just a bit close to the pool for my comfort. Also not really much of a deck to speak of. Very clean, nice flat screen TV, room fairly large. But it is a bit rustic - not a fancy hotel by any means.
Location wise, it's about a 5-6 block walk to Duval street, and there is a good bike/moped rental place about 4 blocks down which is convenient. There's also a CVS (drugstore) across the street from the bike rental. However, it is a very long walk to the popular "bar" end of Duval Street. It's not walkable really to get to the western end of Duval, to Mallory Square/sunset cruises, etc. It's actually closer walking distance to the Hemingway house. I don't think you could really walk to the eastern end of Duval either, to the Southernmost point.
The staff was not particularly helpful. They weren't rude, but they seemed a bit too busy to be bothered with any questions. Pool is nice but very small.
I didn't have a car but if you do, make sure you snag a parking space and I wouldn't give it up. My recommendation is to NOT bring a car to Key West. There are plenty of cabs and parking generally seems messy.
