“Great room rate, but needs upgrading”

Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites

2 of 5 stars
Northern Virginia
Jun 3, 2007

We checked into the hotel the week after graduation. They gave us an unbelievable rate. We have stayed here many times over the years our sons have attended UF. But the quality of the hotel has slid down every year. This time we hit rock bottom. We could not get our keycard to get us into the room. We needed several trips to the front desk and finally they sent us a maintenance guy who told us we had to wiggle the card in the opening because the some of the locks were old and didn't work very well. Eventually one of our cards stopped working not matter how many times we wiggled it, which happended to us the time before we stayed at the Paramount. I doubt we'll be back to Gainesville any time soon, but if we do, we won't be staying here. Despite the problems, they continue to be very full every time we stay there. Even after school was out, they had a lot of people visiting patients at Shands Hospital. I guess when you can fill your rooms despite substandard room quality, you don't need to invest in renovations, which are long overdue here.

“A little better than expected”

Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites

2 of 5 stars
Knoxville, TN
May 7, 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Paramount Hotel & Suites in Gainesville for one night on our way to beach. It was not really convenient to the interstate, however easy to locate. It is located in the older section of town, but we felt safe there. At first we were very concerned about staying there by reading other reviews, but since we bid on it on Priceline.com and got it for $47.00 we could not cancel our reservation. So, we decided to give it a chance and form our own opinion of the place. I will say that I do agree with the fact the the place is in need of some maintenence, our room was not as bad as some had described. It should not be rated a 3 diamond hotel. The hallways leading to the room are in need of some new carpet and brighter lighting and maybe some other updates to make it appear a little more inviting. The room we stayed in was fine though. It had new carpet and did not smell like anything musty as others had mentioned and our air conditioner was quiet and kept our room cool. The bed and pillows were really comfy and soft. The rooom was quite a bit cleaner than we expected it would be, however the comforters on the beds do need to be replaced and the walls are in need of some fresh paint or wallpaper and maybe they could rate it a 3 diamond hotel. The bathroom was very clean and our towels were in good shape, definitely not as others had described as being thin and stringy. I guess I should mention that our room was located in the 1100 building, if I remember correctly. We specifically requested at the front desk for an upper floor/ non-smoking room and got just that. Parking was a bit of a problem as we went out for dinner and came back around 7pm and there was a wedding that had taken place while we we gone and so the parking lot was full, but people attending the wedding began leaving after we circled the parking lot 3 times. Overall, our stay was quiet, clean and comfortable. We were well rested the next day to drive another 4 hours to the beach. I would stay here again, but I would recommend that they do a few updates and maintain their property a little more so that they deserve their 3 diamond rating and improve the overall status of their hotel.

“yucky, run down, and rude”

Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites

1 of 5 stars
Mexico City, Mexico
Apr 24, 2007

Almost everything in this hotel has been poorly cared for. The towels are worn thin, the sheets covered with stains, the paint peeling, the chairs on the balcony broken, the common areas unswept, the toilet paper left unreplenished, the coffee bar without lids for the cups, the coffee maker was filthy. To top it all off, the staff was rude & unhelpful. On the first day of our stay we were without hot water for the entire day. The hotel did nothing to inform us about the problem or to compensate us for this situation. I would highly recommend avoiding this hotel if at all possible. It certainly shouldn't be classified as three stars.

“Great value!!!!”

Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites

5 of 5 stars
Jonesboro, AR
Apr 11, 2007

I can't say enough about my stay here; it was really great. I got a room with a 40 dollar a night coupon I picked up at a rest stop. I was expecting something very bare basic. I ended up being VERY impressed.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and each has a private balcony. The rooms are fairly quiet. All rooms have access from the inside, not outside.

The hotel has a nice outdoor pool that was very clean. The fitness center was quite decent too; it had 2 treadmills, and elliptical, I think a bike, and a weight machine. I did not use the laundry room.

The location is good; it's close to the University of Florida.

The bed was a little uncomfortable though.

I was very impressed at getting such a nice, clean, quiet room for 40 dollars. The staff was very nice, also.

“Home away from home”

Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites

4 of 5 stars
Central Florida
Mar 31, 2007

I had the unfortunate experience of being stranded in Gainesville without a car when my dad was admitted to the VA hospital; I got the name of the Paramount from the Comfort Inn down the street because I was calling around asking for a hotel with a shuttle. The Paramount gave me a VA rate, shuttled me back and forth to the VA hospital, the room was clean, I felt safe especially due to the interior corridor situation and need for a key just to get into the building itself, the dining room staff was pleasant and helpful, the free computer use was a plus, and I felt at home during my entire stay. I am now traveling back and forth as my Dad will be there for quite some time and I am staying for a night or two at a time and it continues to be my home away from home. I appreciate the professionalism of everyone I have encountered at the Paramount Plaza and they have helped make this bad situation as pleasant as possible.
