“Didn't WOW me...”

Jul 13, 2008

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the 4 star hotel... I was disappointed. I researched for a while on where to stay at Daytona Beach. We live about 2 1/2 hours away, and wanted to stay at a "nice" hotel, with 2 queen beds, with a ocean view. I read the reviews, looked at the pictures and decided to book at $200 a night. I have never stayed at such a pricey hotel, but husband said..."book it!" We arrived and checked in with ease. Our luggage was taken up on a cart by a wonderful young man. We came in, the room looked like the picture, I thought I was pretty happy. I looked out the window, we were on the 12th floor, we could view the ocean... but we were right on A1A, noisy. The sliding glass door was a nightmare. I wouldn't slide, got stuck out there a couple of times, and had to have my husband open the door. The microwave didn't work, until I pushed up on the door. The bathroom was very small, no counter space at all to put your makeup and such. The bed's were very comfortable, the pillows were great!! There was a parking shortage for some reason, it was hard to find a place if you left for dinner. The pool was beautiful, and the view from the lobby was very nice. I have to say that the employees were very friendly. I guess we could have gone down and complained, but we are not seasoned travelers, and I really hate to complain. All in all our vacation was nice, but would not stay there again for that price. I guess I just expected a lot for $200 a night. Hope this helps someone. I know that I look to trip advisor and it helps in making a decision.

“The Lobby of the Plaza gives off the wrong impression”

Plaza Resort and Spa

Jun 24, 2008

We booked this hotel because they portray themselves to be a 4-star hotel. The well-appointed lobby certainly makes it seem that way. The rooms told a completely different story. Our first room was on the third floor and just like another reviewer said, the oceanfront view was laughable. The room was as dark as a cave and it was due to the one, very small windowed door that you had to stand on your tiptoes to see anything. The rooms are set up like Embassy suites with a small living room and an adjoining bedroom. The bedroom had no windows whatsoever, making it very dark. I found this to be strange in an oceanfront hotel. The window on the sliding door was covered in grimy fingerprints and the small balcony outside had about 4 inches of standing water with cigarette butts floating in it. The room wreaked of mildew. We immediately asked for a new room and they accommodated us with a 7th floor room. The view out of the little door was much better but the room was still dirty. The baseboards were filthy, the toilet had not been cleaned and there was a hole in the bathroom door that looked like a fist had gone through it. I immediately opened my laptop and went to my trusty Trip Advisor. Another reviewer had checked out and gone to the Shores. We called the Shores and thankfully, they had openings. The differences in the hotels were like night and day. The Shores service was incredible, the rooms were a dream and it made our stay in Daytona perfect. We were there for a family reunion and a large part of our family stayed at Perry's Edge. This too, was quite a nice hotel, very clean with an expansive yard and many pools. Both hotels were above and beyond The Plaza. To top it off, when we left, the elevator broke down for a few minutes while we were headed to our car in the parking garage. Another thing about the Plaza, there is no valet parking. While in the parking garage, a fight started between 2 women and a man. Even the guests seemed a bit on the rough side. If you are looking for a family-friendly, clean, accommodating hotel, do not stay at the Plaza.

“Stay away from The Plaza!!”

Plaza Resort and Spa

Jun 16, 2008

Where do I start? It began last month when I checked my credit card bill and discovered they never charged me for one night back in Feb., like my confirmation said they would. So, when we arrived, we had to pay for 2 nights, when we had only planned to pay for one night. The front desk said they don't do that anymore and I told them my confirmation said they do, so they need to change it!! Then, the bellman was determined to help us with our luggage. I don't like other people touching my personal belongings like that just because of germs. After someone has touched 100 other pieces of luggage that day, I certainly don't want them touching mine. Then, one bellman didn't even want us using his luggage cart-but we used it anyway. I told him I would go back to the front desk because I was already advised we didn't have to use the bellman. Parking is absolutely terrible! The prior reviews I read about the parking were right on the money! You pay $8 a day for parking, but have to park a mile away! Terrible! Just terrible!!! When we finally got to our room, the air conditioner sounded like a freight train every time it kicked on. It was so bad, that we had to turn it off at night, just so we could sleep. Despite the claim that they are newly renovated, I have to disagree. Our bathroom looked like it hadn't been painted in 20 years-not to mention the holes in the ceiling right over the shower. It was also a very, very, small bathroom. No counter space at all. We had to leave everything in our bag in a chair, because there wasn't even room on the bathroom floor. Then, we discovered you couldn't have coolers on the pool deck. Absolutely ridiculous! My daughter has a medical condition that requires her to have lots of water everyday, but even more in the summer time because of the heat. So, my husband had to constantly go back up to our room everytime to get her bottled water. I was furious! We ended up just going in from the pool. The front desk had no sympathy at all and I told them I would never stay there again. The reply was "ok." I know they don't care because they will always have people to stay there. I still wanted to share my experience so when folks go, at least they will have a head's up on what they may expect.

“Just what we expected - overall good experience”

Plaza Resort and Spa

3 of 5 stars
Pittsburgh
May 25, 2008

I had done a decent amount of research before booking the Plaza Resort and Spa and overall found it to be in sync with my expectations.

We arrived to a beautifully appointed lobby - check in was a breeze. Our flight landed a few hours before check in, but they were able to get us into a room right away. Our first room on the 3rd floor, oceanfront, was a little dissapointing. The balcony was so tall that my husband and I had to practically stand on our tip-toes to see over! (Granted we are not tall people...) The furniture on the balcony was also damaged - one chair was completely broken. I called the front desk and she said they could switch us - it would just take some time to prepare another room. Very easy process! We received keys to a room on the 10th floor that was much larger and with a better view of the ocean.

Room notes: room was large and clean with nice furnishings. Great large television and microwave and fridge.
Downside: Bugs outside of room on balcony were overwhelming - we made the poor choice to take a peek and at least 20 mosquitos came into the room. We got many of them and had to look at their guts on the window the entire weekend. I was somewhat surprised housekeeping didn't wipe the glass (it also appeared that we weren't the only ones who let some in - bug guts were also on the walls and ceiling - yikes!!!) Bathroom was tiny - I did lose an item in the toilet! No biggie though...

Other than the bugs, we had fresh towels daily and housekeeping did a fine job otherwise.

Beach/location: great location - although the hotel has no control, the bug issues continued to be a problem. No-see-ums were such a nusiance - we ended up buying bug spray to keep them away. The love-bugs were in an abundance as well, although they aren't such a bother.

Hotel food/bar: Very nice employees, quick service, higher prices as expected. Good snack, food and beverage choices.

Overall - hotel and location worth the price! Please understand the hotel cannot control the bug situation, it just was a part of our trip. Go and have a great time in Daytona!
