We stayed at the Bellissimo Grande for 1 night last week. This is a brand new hotel that opened in April 2007. It is located very close to Foxwoods Casino and offers a complimentary limo service that runs back and forth to the casino until midnight. It is also in a fantastic location if you are planning to visit the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Museum, which is close by.
It is an Italian-themed hotel, which is somewhat bizarre considering that North Stonington is a tiny little village, and basically what this means is Italian frescos in the lobby when you enter and slightly more appealing rooms that you would expect from the average hotel. We stayed in the basic room, called a Sicillian suite, which was a generous size and had a king size bed; the walls were covered in an attractive bronzed wallpaper, and the bathroom was well-designed. Our biggest complaint was the dim lighting - the rooms was lit only by bedside lamps and the bathroom was too shadowy and dim to allow for a good view in the mirror, such as is needed for applying makeup.
Given that the hotel is so new, our room was SPOTLESS, which was hugely appealing. There was a large, flat screen television on the wall opposite the bed. The room offered an iron, ironing board, hair dryer, and safe, although no luggage rack. Apparently, however, luggage racks are on order for the hotel. The hotel charges a daily fee for the safe, even if you don't use it.
The bed was VERY comfortable (despite it not being a tempur-pedic mattress - these are available only in the more expensive rooms). Unfortunately, the air conditioner was very noisy and switched on and off throughout the night according to the thermostate, and we found that we were woken regularly through the night by the unit switching back on. A solution to this would be to set the thermostat to a very low temperature to avoid the unit turning off at night (assuming you like a cold room, as we do!). We requested extra pillows from the front desk, which arrived at our door in moments, so we were quite pleased with the service. Breakfast was uninspiring but quite plentiful, with a choice of 2 cold cereals, yogurt, juice, English muffins, and danishes.
We paid $59 for our room, which was an absolute steal. The publicized rate for the room at this time of year midweek was $99. We got our rate with a coupon from Room Saver magazine, which contains coupons for hotels all over the northeastern US and is available free of charge at rest stops all along the major highways. If you are planning to vacation in the northeast by car, then this magazine is a must, particularly was it offers substantial savings for this hotel.
All in all, we were quite pleased by our stay here, and we would definitely return to it on our next trip to Connecticut.
