July 11th and 12th, 2006 – Traveling to Sacramento on business I had the opportunity to spend two nights at the Sacramento Marriott in Rancho Cordova. Hotel sits between US 50 and Folsom Blvd., about 15 miles from the State Capitol.
At usual for a Marriott property check in was fast, efficient, and friendly. I received the non-smoking king room that I had requested.
My room was # 1027, an end room on Concierge Level. The room was large, about 500 square feet, and looked recently refurbished. I was happy that the room faced East/South, away from US 50, the highway to South Lake Tahoe.
Entering the room I noticed the new Marriott bedding. Later when I went to bed it was apparent that while the bedding was new, the bed was not. It was comfortable, but not as comfortable as the new Marriott bed that I was expecting. There were both feather and foam pillows. The room also had a new and comfortable chair with ottoman.
The bathroom was beautiful having been recently refurbished with granite vanity, new floor, and tub and shower combo. The bathroom had a wall-mounted magnifying mirror, something that my wife always appreciates. There were plenty of thick white towels and the normal selection of bath amenities: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and mouthwash.
The room had a large work desk and high speed internet access by Wayport. The daily charge was $9.95. It worked as expected without any issues. The TV had a large selection of regular and cable channels as well as a large selection of pay-per-view movies. Movies were either $9.99 or $10.99.
I was tired and had work to do so opted for room service dinner both nights of my stay. Prices in room service menu seemed very reasonable. Most dinner entrees were $23 to $24, dinner Salads were $11.50, and all sandwiches and burgers $11.00. There was a good selection of wines by the glass with most in the $7 range. I had one of the menu specials; Porcini Crusted NY Steak for $15.00 which was very good.
The Concierge Lounge offered complimentary wine and beer between 5:30 and 7:30 PM. And a nice selection of appetizers including cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, olive plate, and a hot appetizer; fried mozzarella one night and chicken skewers the next. For breakfast both days there was a scrambled egg and bacon dish as well as a good selection of fresh fruit, cereals, breads and beverages.
One complaint about the hotel was that there were dishes with remains of food left outside of several rooms that were not picked up for more than 24 hours.
The hotel has a nice pool area with four small waterfalls. The waterfalls help mask the noise from the freeway on the North side of the hotel. There were plenty of lounges and towels. The exercise room is located adjacent to the pool area. All of the equipment looked fairly new. There were towels and ice water as well as a TV to help pass the time.
There were renovations going on just off of the lobby. a memo left in the room said a new Starbucks store is being added and it appeared that the lobby bar was in a temporary location. The renovations did not inconvenience me.
Jessie Flippin(?), the Front Desk Manager was very friendly and very helpful. Asked where I could get a haircut, he thought he knew where a Super Cuts shop was. Rather than give me wrong information, he called to verify the location and then gave me directions.
For business at the State Capitol I recommend taking light rail. The Sunrise station is directly across the street from the Marriott. The trip “downtown” takes about 30 minutes and stops at 8th and “O”. Parking in one of the state lots is $20.00 per day so the light rail not only saves money, but time as well. The fare is $1.75 each way for the 30 minute ride.
I enjoyed my stay at the Sacramento Marriott. Service was excellent and the hotel was comfortable. I will likely stay here again when in the area.
