“building complex, but...”

The Horizon Hotel

3 of 5 stars
Jamestown
Mar 9, 2008

We stayed 2 nights at the Horizon. The complex is very beautiful. Wonderful architecture, very well maintained garden and pool area (the lawn is so perfect it looks fake, immagine the amounts of fertilizer they use)
The check-in was simple and the staff friendly.

Our room, one of the bigger ones, had a nice glass wall overlooking the complex. The furniture a bit disappointing, all very "tasteful" but nothing exciting or worthwhile from a design point of view and rather sparsely furnished. The bed was very comfortable though.

The big bathroom with a large shower both indoor and outdoor was.. big and empty. It looked like somebody had stolen the furniture!
There was no place to place any toiletries, except for the floor. The 2 wash basins very small and very low.
One electrical socket was hanging half out of the wall, very safe in a bathroom! One of the lights would go on and off all the time, rather annoying at night.

We had a comfortable night. You can slightly hear the traffic on the nearby street, even if our room was the furthest away.

Breakfast can be had in the room, on your own patio or near the pool. The croissants were very good, the rest very average. They could have put more effort in finding some quality products and not the usual cheap stuff. And everything, from the Granola to the Orange Juice, was loaded with sugar. There is no option of a sugarless breakfast. Strangely enough there was no sugar or sweetener for the coffee.

Then the second night... we found out that our room can be linked to the room next door.. how did we find out? because of the noise. The first night that next door room was empty, the second hight we could hear everything that happened in that room, and I mean everything. The door between the 2 rooms is tiny and doesn't close well. Light and sound travels through it.

So that was rather annoying.

Would we stay here again? No. There are other hotels with the same kind of modernist design atmosphere, and better ones.

“Beautiful Grounds, Clean Rooms, Friendly/Down to Earth Personnel - We Loved It!!”

The Horizon Hotel

Mar 8, 2008

I'm used to staying in 5-star hotels but decided to stay in this small hotel because of it's architectural significance to the mid-century period and it's good reviews.

The personnel were friendly and down to earth. The lobby has clean lines and easy check in.

We stayed in Room 3C, the Standard Queen because it had the bathroom with full privacy, as opposed to the larger units with bathrooms / showers that opened up to a private outdoor setting.

The rooms were clean, clean, clean! The bed was comfy, linens were high end. Towels were adequately supplied and not excessive - which I'm for, in a effort to conserve. The interior decor was simple, black, white and carpet w/ mod design of cocoa brown, blue - very simple, clean lines, in keeping with the spirit of the mid 50's modern decor. The furniture was not expensive but didn't have to be - as they were functional and fit in with the overall decor. There was a stocked frig and bar-ware and wine glass opener. There was a nice-sized LCD TV w/ DVD player (they supply a DVD library in the lobby to borrow from). But what we loved the most were the two walls of ceiling-to-floor windows, one with a sliding glass door opening up to a pod-patio with two chairs and table, facing the pool, and the other window/wall opening to a private desert landscape. This effect "brought the outdoors in", so to speak, and made the room feel airy, spacious and filled the room with natural light. You could pull the white sheers over the window if you wanted some privacy but still feel a connection to the outdoors. OR you could pull back the heavy insulated white drapes if you wanted complete black-out to sleep in and keep the outdoor heat or cold out.

There are 3 rooms to each building, but the building layout and landscape design resulted in a a sense of privacy even with the drapes pulled back.

The grounds are more beautiful than the pictures - the combination of green grass, desert landscape, the coolness of the pool and outdoor bar and low profile buildings results in a feeling of serenity, privacy and a true R&R place. The grounds were immaculately maintained, too.

Breakfast was included and ordered the night before via a "door hang" on to which you marked what you wanted. It was a smartly-designed order form, including the time you wanted breakfast delivered, and where you wanted breakfast delivered (patio, in-room). I was pleasantly surprised at the freshness of what was delivered - the coffee was rich and fresh (via french-press), the cream was ice cold, the bagle was still hot from just being toasted, plenty of cream cheese and choice of preserves, yoplait yogurt, orange juice were ice cold, and metal utensils and cloth napkins were supplied. It wasn't a luxurious breakfast or setting, but the food and service-ware was perfect for the setting and we loved it. We had asked for patio delivery, but opted to bring the food into the room which was easy because of the tray. Also, a local newspaper was delivered outside our room.

We liked the secured parking behind automatic gates and the parking was close to the rooms. Also, the unit included a safe large enough to accommodate an avg-sized laptop.

The only things we would propose as possible improvements would be to install a towel hanger (we used the wall hooks for hanging the wet towels). There was no coffee maker but that didn't bother us.

“Comfortable, hip, and peaceful!”

My husband and I loved this hotel! The hotel has been remodeled to keep it's mid-century modern roots but modern day amenities were not neglected (super comfy beds, flat screen tvs, etc.). Continental breakfast is provided which you can eat in your room, on your patio, or poolside. My only recommendation is to request not to be in a room on the south side of the hotel (I think it was 7A specifically) as the glass shower is visible to the condos nearby...

“Flashback into the 60's with style!”

This place is amazing! It's a flashback from the 1960's. The property is beautiful, the staff is very relaxed and helpful. We throughly enjoyed the Horizon. We stayed during Coachella 2006.

The grounds were well manicured and spacious. The rooms were huge! The hotel is a minimalist hotel. The staff is very small and there aren't as many amenites here as most hotels (i.e. spa, large hotel lobby, etc) but the property and rooms make up for that.

They brought us a continental breakfast each morning with great coffee in a press and fresh croissants and bagels. Every night we filled out a breakfast request and hung it outside the door with the bread request and time of the delivery.

If you are looking for privacy, space and comfort, try the Horizon.
