Stayed April 1 and 2, 2007. Business for my husband, pleasure for the rest of us. Booked online through the Hyatt website, AAA price included breakfast. This experience was possibly influenced by the amount of business that was being conducted. The hotel was busy with an organized event the whole time we stayed. The staff was swamped, the front desk constantly swarmed by an unorganized mob that did not understand the concept of waiting their turn, whoever pushed to the front of the line got served. I've never seen such a disorganized and unpleasant check-in/concierge system. Arriving a bit early, the room was not ready, and were told that it would be ready in 1 1/2 hours. Almost 3 hours later the room was finally ready (the next day the maid took about 10 minutes to clean the room). The room was fairly nice with a balcony overlooking lovely landscaping, a part of the bay, and the little 9 hole golf course.
We had take-out from the bar both evenings, the food was fine, service OK. We were given breakfast tickets for the restaurant and it was good food. Thankfully I had read the small print on the ticket before handing it over to the staff, limited menu and beverages being only coffee or tea. Both days, as we were being seated for breakfast the waiter began pouring OJ, before asking if any was wanted. I felt that this was rather deceptive for the unaware, as I later heard other diners complaining about being billed unexpectedly for juice, etc.
The second night we requested a roll-away. I called the front desk and was told that there were no roll-aways available. A quick check around various buildings showed 14 unused roll-aways tucked into nooks and crannies around the hotel. Annoyed that I had been lied to I went to the lobby and fought the mob for a small space at the front desk to make my request in person, which was then honored.
The last day I requested a late check-out and was told no way until I pointed out that I had to wait for my room at check in and was given a reprieve until 1:00PM.
The location of this hotel is good for a few local activities, a short walk to Newport Beach and over to Balboa on the ferry. The shuttle runs every two hours to Fashion Island and to a drop off point for the beach (it is faster to walk). I feel that the shuttle should run every hour to better serve the guests, two hours is too rushed, and four hours is probably too long for most trips to the mall or the beach.
The quality of the room that I saw was just OK, not what I would expect from a Hyatt. Service definitely sub par, with a few pleasant exceptions.
I doubt that I will stay here again.
