“Another Priceline Winner”

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach

4 of 5 stars
California
Apr 26, 2007

I had business in Orange County and used Priceline to find a good hotel. Got this one at a bargain rate. The rooms were very nice. The bed comfortable. I found the front desk a little snooty but after a few minutes they loosened up. Business office was useful for printing out boarding passes and other stuff. Not free but not outrageous. The restuarant was a pleasant surprise. Dined on the patio to a beautiful sunset. The Ahi was great and so was the martini:-)

“Just OK”

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach

2 of 5 stars
Atlanta, Georgia

Stayed April 1 and 2, 2007. Business for my husband, pleasure for the rest of us. Booked online through the Hyatt website, AAA price included breakfast. This experience was possibly influenced by the amount of business that was being conducted. The hotel was busy with an organized event the whole time we stayed. The staff was swamped, the front desk constantly swarmed by an unorganized mob that did not understand the concept of waiting their turn, whoever pushed to the front of the line got served. I've never seen such a disorganized and unpleasant check-in/concierge system. Arriving a bit early, the room was not ready, and were told that it would be ready in 1 1/2 hours. Almost 3 hours later the room was finally ready (the next day the maid took about 10 minutes to clean the room). The room was fairly nice with a balcony overlooking lovely landscaping, a part of the bay, and the little 9 hole golf course.
We had take-out from the bar both evenings, the food was fine, service OK. We were given breakfast tickets for the restaurant and it was good food. Thankfully I had read the small print on the ticket before handing it over to the staff, limited menu and beverages being only coffee or tea. Both days, as we were being seated for breakfast the waiter began pouring OJ, before asking if any was wanted. I felt that this was rather deceptive for the unaware, as I later heard other diners complaining about being billed unexpectedly for juice, etc.
The second night we requested a roll-away. I called the front desk and was told that there were no roll-aways available. A quick check around various buildings showed 14 unused roll-aways tucked into nooks and crannies around the hotel. Annoyed that I had been lied to I went to the lobby and fought the mob for a small space at the front desk to make my request in person, which was then honored.
The last day I requested a late check-out and was told no way until I pointed out that I had to wait for my room at check in and was given a reprieve until 1:00PM.
The location of this hotel is good for a few local activities, a short walk to Newport Beach and over to Balboa on the ferry. The shuttle runs every two hours to Fashion Island and to a drop off point for the beach (it is faster to walk). I feel that the shuttle should run every hour to better serve the guests, two hours is too rushed, and four hours is probably too long for most trips to the mall or the beach.
The quality of the room that I saw was just OK, not what I would expect from a Hyatt. Service definitely sub par, with a few pleasant exceptions.
I doubt that I will stay here again.

“Pretty hotel in nice location”

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach

4 of 5 stars
Overland Park, Kansas

The Hyatt is a resort-style hotel laid out in several buildings on a pretty piece of property. It borders a park, golf course and Jamboree Road, which means it has easy access to Balboa Island as well as Fashion Island mall and the 73/405. If you can't find something good to eat at Fashion Island, the PCH is very close and has many other choices. The gym is small but has nice, up-to-date equipment and good ammenities like TVs for each machine and free earphones to use if you didn't bring your own. The lobby bar was never crowded (is it ever open?) and didn't try room service. The Sand Bar lounge looked fine and had a fun patio area.

The rooms are a good size for Newport Beach, and I was thrilled to find that each room has an individual heating/cooling unit. (Not just your own thermostat, but your own unit, so the air coming into your room hasn't been in dirty ducts and 600 other rooms, too). Very nice! There was a (very small) fridge in each room, and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom light is on the outside wall (why?!?!) but the bathroom was clean and the toiletries were nice.

The grounds include a couple of nice but old pools and an area for ping-pong or shuffleboard. My balcony had a screened door, so not only did I have clean cold or hot air, I could open my balcony door and have nice fresh air.

The parking situation is a mess unless your building is right on the edge of the lot. Mostly a mess overall. You have to get a ticket unless the machine runs out and often there is no attendant. If you can afford it, use valet.

Also, I was in the lido building on the second floor. I walked around the whole first floor and found no elevator, so I lugged my 50-pound suitcase up the flight of stairs and around to my room. I know. I should pack lighter. But I'd also expect a place like this to have an elevator in each building. A co-worker was smarter and had a bellman carry her bags. I would have too if I'd known there was no elevator.

There is a Hertz office right on property which is convenient, and the hotel is only 5-10 minutes from SNA/John Wayne. Front desk staff was friendly. I'd stay here again.

Nice and relaxing hotel, but the front desk wasn't well train. Great housekeeping service. Inconvenience parking location, not senior or handicap friendly. Hotel sign/map throughout the hotel is not visible and more light is needed everywhere.

“Not as nice as it should be for the money. Spa lost our reservations too!”

Hyatt Regency Newport Beach

We stayed one night. We thought the bed was nice and the room was large. Bathroom was tiny for a room this size. Had a nice radio that you could hook your iPod into, but at night you had to unplug it as the night light on it was way too bright. Room had a nice balcony. The outlet in the bathroom and the one for the fridge went on the blink and did not work (it would not reset either by pushing the button). Then the biggest problem was that we booked massages at the spa on the property. We showed up and they couldn't find our reservations! We were so mad. I made them with the owner of the spa directly! They wouldn't do anything about it either. So we complained to the manager of the hotel and he took $75 off our hotel bill for our trouble. That was good business! I would have rather had my massage though!
